“I came to this ER last night because I was having symptoms that genuinely concerned me and I wanted to be evaluated. Unfortunately, my experience with the physician brought back a very upsetting experience I had at this same hospital in the past.
During my visit, the doctor told me that what I was experiencing was “all in my head.” What made that especially difficult to hear is that I remember seeing this same physician before my heart attack, when I came to this hospital because I felt that something was wrong with my heart. At that time, I was also told that it was essentially “all in my head.” A few months later, I suffered an acute myocardial infarction. Since then, I have also learned that I have plaque in my left carotid artery and an inherited genetic condition affecting the electrical signaling of my heart.
Because of that history, hearing those same words again was extremely upsetting and honestly triggering. One of the biggest reasons I struggle to seek medical attention is because I have experienced having very real symptoms dismissed before, only to later find out that there was an actual medical problem.
What also bothered me about last night was feeling dismissed before my entire evaluation was even complete. My laboratory results were not all back when that statement was made. When they did return, my potassium was 2.9, low enough that I was given potassium replacement in the ER. My CT also documented significant stomach distention and residual contrast in the distal esophagus. I understand that these findings do not necessarily explain every symptom I was experiencing and that the ER did not find an acute abdominal emergency. That is not my complaint. My complaint is being told that my symptoms were “all in my head” rather than having someone simply say, “We have not found the cause yet.”
There is an enormous difference between telling a patient that testing has not identified an emergency and telling them that what they are experiencing is imaginary or psychological. Given my previous experience with this exact kind of dismissal, I found the interaction extremely discouraging.
I do, however, want to specifically thank the nurses, radiology staff, and everyone else who cared for me. That is the reason for my 4 star rating. They were incredibly kind, patient, understanding, and validating. They listened to what I was experiencing without making me feel ridiculous for seeking help. Their compassion genuinely made up for a very negative interaction with the physician, and I am extremely grateful for the way they treated me.
I hope the hospital takes this feedback seriously. Patients should be able to seek emergency care when something feels wrong without being made to feel ashamed or dismissed simply because the cause is not immediately obvious.”
