Each appointment begins not with a haircut, but with what can only be described as a carefully orchestrated restoration of dignity. I walk in looking like I’ve spent several weeks surviving in the wilderness, arguing with squirrels over trail mix, and emerge looking so remarkably spiffy that my own reflection takes a second glance before nodding in approval.

Joel possesses an almost supernatural understanding of hair. I’m convinced he doesn’t actually “cut” it—he negotiates with each individual strand until it voluntarily falls into perfect formation. The fade is cleaner than my life decisions have ever been, the beard lines are so sharp they could probably qualify as precision instruments, and somehow he manages to make me look like I have my finances, sleep schedule, and emotional stability completely under control.

The atmosphere is top-notch, the conversation is always solid, and there has never been a moment where I’ve walked out thinking, “Eh, it’ll grow on me.” It already looks exactly how it should. Every. Single. Time.

My wife approves. My daughter says I look handsome. Random strangers seem slightly more polite. Even automatic doors appear to open with a little more enthusiasm after a visit.

If you’re searching for a barber who consistently delivers exceptional cuts while making you leave looking extraordinarily spiffy, Joel is your guy. Five stars feels insufficient, but unfortunately Google refuses to let me award the twelve out of five that this establishment clearly deserves.

“This was our first visit to the Great Clips on Ellsworth and Rittenhouse, but all the others had wait times and closing time was looming, so we gave it a shot. To put things in context, my daughter is not an easy cut: she's neurodivergent, shy and speaks quietly, and doesn't communicate her thoughts well. She's an older teen, so I've trained her to try and find pictures of her desired outcome to show the stylist. The stylist at this location (and the ones at Ellsworth and Riggs)? Top notch. I warn them when we arrive, then ask for their most patient stylist. The stylists have been so patient and kind, and usually the haircut turns out pretty close to what she wanted. Don't worry; I try and leave a very generous tip because our needs are so particular, but I truly am impressed... and thankful. (There are a couple locations i won't go back to, but will drive the extra ten to twenty minutes to get to these locations!)“
