“I’ve been going to this dojo for a little over 6 months now. It started out as taking one self defense class for fun and curiosity’s sake, and has now turned into what I hope will be a life-long discipline.
I am a student of Ms. Borland’s class but have also attended many of Mr. Borland’s classes as well, and they both have a style of teaching that allows you to weave the applications of Karate into almost every aspect of your life. Yes, you do learn moves that you can use to defend yourself and how to strike if absolutely necessary—but you also learn about the art form, the history, the culture from which this style of karate stems from. You learn to develop your accountability and self-discipline, in an environment that promotes universal respect, diversity and learning from your mistakes. The only thing anyone here cares about, from what I’ve seen, is that you have an interest in Karate. I say I’m a student of the Borlands, but everyone has been a teacher in this dojo. From the lowest to the highest rank. I haven’t been to the other dojos but have met some from New Paltz and East Fishkill and Brooklyn, all who emanate the same energy.
It’s not just about getting a black belt, but understanding what it takes to get to that point, and incorporating those lessons not just in martial arts, but in your life as well.“
