“Since starting SMA our son has shown so many examples of strong moral character, kindness, and resilience. He genuinely tries to live by, “Choose to do the R.I.G.H.T.” because in his words, “that’s what Black Belts do.” During a very informal game of mini golf, everyone else was being silly and blatantly cheating. He never took more than one swing, moved his ball, or tried to gain an unfair advantage. He simply played by the rules even when no one else was. He chose to do what was right even when it would have been easier to follow everyone else. A few weeks ago, our son and our three year old daughter were playing in our wood shop when their dad began using a new, very loud piece of equipment. His first instinct wasn’t to cover his own ears, it was to cover his sister’s. He will also often give up a turn or let his sister have a toy simply because it makes her smile. We’ve explained that he doesn’t always have to give in to her, but you have to love the heart behind it. Our son is still learning and growing, but he genuinely wants to be a good person. He wants to be fair, protect the people he loves, and make the right choice. Even when no one is watching. He may be young but he is already showing the kind of character we hope he carries throughout his life. He chooses to do the R.I.G.H.T. because he believes that’s what Black Belts do and we couldn’t be prouder of the Black Belt he is becoming.”
