“I don’t normally share something this personal in a Google review, but I feel like it’s important because I know I’m not the only person who is afraid of going to the dentist.

I grew up in foster care and had little to no dental care growing up. When I was 18 and had aged out of the system, I took myself to a dentist because I had an infected tooth. Instead of being treated with compassion, I was mocked for having Medicaid. The staff talked about how having Medicaid “must be nice” while I was sitting right there.

What happened next stayed with me for years. They proceeded to pull my infected tooth without properly numbing me. I cried, screamed and tried to get out of the chair while an assistant held me down. I eventually managed to get up and leave completely inconsolable.

That experience traumatized me so badly that it took years before I could bring myself to see another dentist.

Fast forward to my 40s, and unfortunately my teeth have paid the price. Going to the dentist felt like the equivalent of walking into a room knowing someone was going to hurt me. My anxiety would completely take over. I was terrified of anyone touching my mouth.

And then I met Dr. Ribando and Jenny at Friendly Dentistry.

I genuinely wish I could put into words what these two have done for me.

They listened to my story. They understood that my fear wasn’t me being difficult or dramatic—it came from something that actually happened to me. They have never made me feel ashamed about the condition of my teeth or judged me for how I got here. They speak to me with respect, explain what they are doing, and make sure I feel safe and comfortable.

For the first time in my adult life, I can go to the dentist without being terrified. I never thought I would be able to say that.

Sometimes I wish I had found Dr. Ribando and Jenny years ago because maybe my teeth would be in a much better place today. But I can’t change the cards I was dealt growing up, and I can’t change what happened to me when I was 18.

What I can change is what happens from here.

Dr. Ribando and Jenny taught me something I wish I had learned a long time ago: dental care doesn’t have to be scary. Sometimes you just have to find the right people.

I finally found those people.

I appreciate Dr. Ribando and Jenny more than they will probably ever know. If you have dental anxiety, if you’ve had a traumatic experience with a dentist, or if you’ve avoided dental care for years because you’re embarrassed or afraid, please don’t let that keep you away forever.

There are compassionate people out there who will meet you where you are instead of judging you for how you got there.

For me, those people are Dr. Ribando and Jenny. ❤
