About UCSD Student Health Services
UCSD Student Health Services offers comprehensive primary medical care, including urgent care, laboratory services, pharmacy, and x-ray. The staff includes board-certified physicians in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine, with some specialists in Gynecology, Sports Medicine, Rheumatology, Urgent Care, and Mental/Behavioral Health. Many patients find the providers to be helpful, kind, and attentive, with some staff members notably caring and passionate about their work, especially in the pharmacy and optometry departments. The pharmacy provides affordable OTC medicines and vitamins, making it a convenient resource for students. However, the experience with staff varies. While the healthcare providers, nurses, and some front desk associates are described as helpful, kind, and professional, other staff members, particularly at the front desk, can sometimes be rude or overworked, leading to negative interactions. There are reports of staff losing or delaying important documents, such as lab work and faxes, which can cause significant issues like missed surgeries or delays. Despite these issues, many reviewers appreciate the quality of care received from providers and the usefulness of services when procedures are followed, including the use of MyChart and respecting appointment times. Overall, UCSD Student Health Services is recognized for its good medical care and supportive health promotion programs, but patients highlight the importance of patience and persistence due to occasional staff inconsistencies.
I’m not here to name names, but I am convinced that the medical care provided here—especially by some of the nurse practitioners—is subpar. It took me three separate visits over the span of two months, with the same worsening symptoms, for the NP to even consider testing me for streptococcus. Keep in mind that my symptoms remained consistent throughout and matched the classic presentation of strep throat: swollen neck lymph nodes and a sore throat.
This extended period of prescribed rest without medication potentially put me at risk of developing rheumatic fever. I was only swabbed and tested after repeatedly begging for something to be done about my worsening...read full review
Got into a bike accident last week and they refused to give me a bandage or disinfectant to clean my wound. Ask me to fill out pages of forms when my hands was clearly bleeding quite much. And required me to pay 75-175$ just because my healthcare is not UC ship but still is at UCSD. The front desk attitude is terrible. I'd expect much better from a school this big and well-regarded in medical studies.
Ok, the pharmacy and the Optometry department here IS REALLY REALLY GOOD. The staff here (at least during the time of writing) is extremely nice and patient, and also they know what they are doing! Actually though, double the salary of the optometry staff, they are so passionate and caring in what they do.
Some of the staff here are rude, as I believe they are probably just overworked (looking at you, the front desk staff). Furthermore, as that one other review said, Esther Choi seem like a really dismissive(?) doctor, for a lack of better words. However (again), she DID give my the prescription I want after some explanation. She just seem dismissive (some people...read full review
