18 Roth St, Alexandria“Josh Sensei is a passionate and knowledgeable instructor. With a keen eye for detail and a drive for progression, you will be in the same good hands that I have been in since the middle of 2019. Between the training atmosphere and the various dojo get togethers, outside of COVID-19 times of course, Josh Sensei has bolstered a welcoming atmosphere that anyone willing to come in and dedicate the time to training should enjoy their stay. On top of this, he is willing to go out of his way to answer questions both inside and out of class and has even provided extra trainings at the sole cost of his time on special occasions. Come prepared to learn and work hard as those efforts will yield gains in yourself that you have yet to know as the value of the training provided is well worth the cost.“

“My relationship with Lead By Example Martial Arts is not that of a student, but rather of someone with a business relationship with the school's leadership. Our interactions with the leaders--particularly Janet--have been great. They are professional, responsive, innovative, kind, and extremely passionate about providing their students with the best experience and tools. Based on our professional relationship, I know they care deeply for their students and their experience. I would recommend them to anyone looking for martial arts instruction in the area.“

2915 Arlington Dr, Alexandria“Our family cannot say enough wonderful things about Yoo’s Authentic Martial Arts! From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed and supported by the entire staff. The level of instruction is top-notch. The team is not only highly skilled but also incredibly patient and encouraging. They take the time to ensure each student is learning proper technique while also instilling confidence, discipline, and respect.
What truly sets Yoo’s apart is their genuine care for every family and child who walks through their doors. They create a nurturing and positive environment where kids can thrive both physically and mentally. Our child has grown tremendously, not just in martial arts skills but in self-esteem, focus, and perseverance.
Beyond the instruction, the sense of community here is unmatched. The families, students, and staff create a supportive and uplifting atmosphere that makes every class a joy to attend. It’s clear that Yoo’s isn’t just about martial arts—it’s about building character, strong relationships, and a sense of belonging.
If you’re looking for a place that combines excellence in training with heart and community, look no further than Yoo’s Authentic Martial Arts. We’re so grateful to be part of this amazing family!“

“First I didn’t intent to start with martial arts again, but when I saw the FB ad, I actually thought "well, why not". I didn’t know a lot about Karate, except for that there are different styles like Shotokan or Kyokushin, but I didn’t know any details. They explained that they were teaching a style (Shorin Ryu) with older roots that would come from Okinawa. The centerline orientation and the more deflecting than blocking movements actually reminded me of Wing Chun, what I used to do a long time ago. Virginia Dojo’s aim is to train adults. Competitions or movements that require acrobatic skills are not performed here. Foot techniques are also set lower, which reminded me of Wing Chun as well. Teenagers who want to let off steam with their peers would be bored here. It is a school for people who are already further along in life, a school which is run conscientiously and also with a certain seriousness, but reasonably and calmly. Unfortunately, I've had several bad experiences in Wing Chun with "sifus" who showed off their skills on the students and put them down instead of teaching them things. That's a shame, because I really liked Wing Chun. I've only been at Virginia Dojo for a good month now, so I'm still a complete white belt noob, neither do I have experience with other Karate styles, but I feel comfortable there, I like the atmosphere and thus can recommend the place with 5 stars if you're aged 30+ or don't have championship ambitions.“
