“My 4 year-old son has been going to Kicks Karate North Potomac for about 9 months. It's been an amazing experience! The instructors are excellent--they break things down in an age-appropriate way, make the class fun, and work with your kiddo on their particular issues. The emphasis on first-time listening, focus, and respect has actually made a big difference at home too. My kiddo loves this class and I've seen him grow and learn so much in 9 months. They also do extra events like Mom's Night Off and Kick-a-thon, which is a fundraiser for a local nonprofit. It's a great community feeling on top of everything else. Highly recommend!“

“I started classes at Krav Oz because I had free time and wanted to learn self defense, and I personally think for everything they offer, the people you get to interact with, and the coaching it is more than worth it. The coaches are always encouraging and detailed in explanations for beginners. They also helped me find a good physical therapy place when I injured myself playing soccer. Which they weren’t obligated to do but they still were very helpful. Overall I’d say at the very least this is a place to check out and go to for a few months. I definitely would say it’s worth it. They got some great and genuine people on their staff.“

“Our 5 year old has been taking classes for the last 7 months and he loves them. The lil dragons classes are perfect for little ones with a good mix of technique and games. He gets such a sense of accomplishment when he gets the next stripe/belt. We love the smaller class sizes. We appreciate the flexible schedule as well. They offer classes 4 days a week and you pick 2 to attend. You can attend more if you need to make up classes.“

I enrolled my son in Kicks Karate – Clarksburg, MD at the end of November 2025. My son is very picky when it comes to choosing a program and was skeptical at first. However, after attending a pleasant trial class, he showed genuine interest and willingness to join the karate program.

I was truly impressed by the diligent follow-up, along with the terrific guidance and support provided during the sign-up and enrollment process.

In every single session, it has been phenomenal to observe how the instructors and assistant instructors make the program as fun as possible, helping remove fear and build confidence in the kids. They divide the children into small teams so that each child receives individual attention, which motivates them immensely.

As a family, when we attended his first-level graduation, my wife and elder son were astonished by how much he had learned in such a short period of time. Kudos to the instructors for investing quality time in the kids and helping them gain confidence, discipline, and skills.

“I first studied here in the 1990s, where I received my black belt from Grand Master Lee. And then life did what it does and we moved away and I had to stop. 30 years later, life did what it does again, and I'm working in the area, and there is no place I'd rather go to get back into the art. Master Joon is patient and engaging with young and old students alike, and he carries on his father's school with amazing fidelity. There's a good sense of community and a strong emphasis on the martial arts ethos as well as the physical art itself. Five stars is not enough.“

“I can’t say enough good things about my time training at Yamasaki Academy. From the moment I started, the environment was welcoming, respectful, and truly focused on growth.

My husband and I first visited the academy back in November, driving about an hour from our home just to check it out. I was honestly a bit hesitant at first because of the distance, but Max had already had such positive experiences interacting with Professor Fernando and his son while working tournaments that he convinced me it would be worth the drive.

After that first class, I was the one pushing him to reach out so we could sign up. It didn’t take long for me to see how special the academy is. We were more than happy to drive 41 miles each way just to train there once a week, and that alone says everything.

The level of instruction, professionalism, and attention to students is something you don’t find everywhere. Professor and the team genuinely care about their students, and it shows in the culture they’ve built.

I’m incredibly grateful for the time I spent training here and everything I learned in the short time. This is THE place to train in the DMV area. Having at least five black belts (often more) on the mats with you, along with highly skilled and competitive brown and purple belts, creates an unmatched training environment.

Professor Fernando, who is a coral belt, is not someone who simply watches from the sidelines. He is actively engaged, teaching and coaching during the class - even rolling with students. That level of involvement is rare and speaks volumes about his dedication.

Although I’ll be moving farther away and won’t be able to continue training here, I would absolutely recommend Yamasaki Academy to anyone looking for high-level instruction in a supportive and respectful community.“

I'm surprised no one has written anything for the past 5 years, but Mike Lin, the current Sifu, is a master of Wing Chun, in the authentic Moy Yat lineage, Ip Man's final student. You can trace the lineage and Sifu's directly back to Ip Man.
