“I cannot begin to tell you how thrilled we are with the work Tom and his team performed for us. We contacted five or six contractors for a remodel of the kitchen with a changed layout (removal of a dining room) plus reflooring of the entire first floor and changing out the vanity in the powder room, and Tom was the only one who immediately understood our vision, took a collaborative approach to the walkthrough, and pushed back on a thought we had about layout. Others did what we asked for in their estimates, but Tom did what we needed in the estimate.

After selecting Tom to go forward, he took us to work with Lauren at Studio 41 in Schaumburg, and it was very clear they had worked together a bunch and had a common language and vision between them. Her layout of our kitchen was amazing, and the materials she helped select for the cabinets and countertops were absolutely perfect. She even designed a “drop zone” bench and upper cabinet for our entryway, because we’d mentioned we wanted to at least reduce the large closet that penned in our entryway. It’s amazing, and opens up the space so much.

Then he had us work with Denise at The Tile Shop in Lake Zurich, and they both reassured us about the quality and reliability of the products we selected. We ended up with vinyl plank flooring for the whole first floor, a tile for the entryway, and tile for the backsplash in the kitchen. Again, clearly they had worked together and were great about balancing quality and affordability, just like with Lauren.

It was time to start the work. Tom and his team of Martin as construction lead and Andrew and Andrew (not a typo) as craftsmen were great throughout. Because as least one of us was home as they worked, if they had questions or ideas on how to do things different or better, we were right there to figure it out with them or agree with their suggestions. It went amazingly smoothly. That’s not to say it was without those sorts of things that always pop up, but rather that they came up with solutions or consulted us through decisions when needed.

We were so thrilled as they made recommendations and offers to improve the solution, like removing the old toilet paper holder and patching that wall. There had once been a medicine cabinet in that bath, but was last covered up by just a mirror. Instead of hanging the new mirror over the gaping hole as the last remodelers had, they fully patched that hole, as it should have been. This and others were not about an upsell moment, but rather making the solution as right as it should be. Tom was by just about every day, which was so reassuring and very helpful for when bumps in the road came up - nothing slowed down progress.

The time estimate that was given was 6-8 weeks in duration, with variability built in for the Christmas and New Year holidays plus a buffer in case there were any issues. We came in right between the 7- and 8-week mark after that buffer was taken up with accommodation for them to finish up some straggling decisions on another project, as well as start on another small project quicker because of the timing of delivery of some appliances we’d ordered. And of that time, the last 10 days was relatively light with bursts of activity, allowing us to move back into spaces in the kitchen as they were completed, like the upper cabinets and pantry, while waiting on the countertop to arrive (a natural, built-in constraint - cabs have to all be in place before the countertop can be measured). Oh, and Karl was great with the countertop - even with a couple of curves, he nailed it!

Between Tom’s expertise, an excellent team of designers and craftspeople, strong attention to detail, and never, ever feeling like we were being sold or pushed into anything, this experience was absolutely the best this level of work could have been. We cannot recommend Tom strongly enough.”
