Training sessions were always physically demanding, intellectually challenging, and emotionally welcoming. I travel for this kind of instruction, and happily recommend it to students of all experience, age, and temperament.“

We first found out about this place by attending a birthday party here. All the children got to break a board and got a great introduction offer to start classes.“

My son has learned so much in a short amount of time and genuinely loves coming. the classes are affordable and they teach in a way that is inclusive and easy to follow. The parents get to join in sometimes too which I love! I can see this being part of our lives for a long time to come :) Also, all of the instructors and the leadership team are amazing! Ms. Ahmeti is our favorite!“

Place is super clean. Great atmosphere. A good size class, everyone has a partner. Coaches are welcoming, experienced, kind & attentive.
Our son’s second class was tonight and from Tuesday to tonight- there was already a significant change in his form! Awesome!
Thanks!!!“

Our older Daughter is 10 and has been with them for over 2 years now, she’s a blue/green belt and our 8 year old Daughter has been attending just over a year and just got her blue belt! They love the Kempo program here!! Sensei Tyson is great with the kids, he teaches them skill and discipline while still having fun. The business owners are also great, extremely accommodating and family oriented. We’ve brought friends in with us over the years and the kids have such a great time all together. We love ninja nights too! We highly recommend this dojo and so grateful we found them! Thanks Boise Studio of Self Defense!“

1240 E Fairview Ave #101, Meridian“I’ve been here since June 2022 (~1.5 years) and I really like what I am learning here. Sensei is really knowledgeable in the martial art and also the “lore” behind it. I did kajukenbo (a mixed martial art) for 3-4 years and I like this one better. I don’t like things that are very athletic, and this fits me really well. My fellow students are nice people and this dojo is a positive environment to learn and grow. Hopefully I’ll be here until I’m 18! Haha-LarsP.S. My old martial art didn’t plan the unit/lessons, so we just did whatever the instructor thought of. I really appreciate the planning into our lesson for the day/year.“

Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Being a 6 month beginner its sometimes intimidating going to a new place but everyone here made me feel like home. I will be coming back again if I am ever in the area for work! Thanks everyone at The Base for a great experience!DanRoy Washington“

2210 N Meridian Rd, Meridian“My 9 year old son currently has been practicing at this dojo for 3 months now. I will have to say I am impressed with this dojo. I have taken martial arts myself when I was a child starting at the age of 8 and continuing on till I was 18 and then off and on, so I have been around a few dojo's and taken different styles. Before my son started at this dojo, I went and toured other's to see what would fit him the best. Here what made this dojo stand out from the rest.
It has a great balance of discipline and acceptance of were and how a student is doing. It is not so strict that a student doesn't think that they are making progress, but there is a sense of ownership instilled onto the student to do the correct movements. They want students to feel like they have growth but also aren't going to just give out belts if the student is there for a certain amount of time. In fact you have to earn your white belt when you start, many styles you are just given a white belt when you show up.
Secondly, I really like the instructors. During the week classes focus on different aspects. One night it might be forms and another night it will be practical applications to what the students have learned. One night when I was there, I can remember the Sensei telling one of the kids to grab her hair to demonstrate a technique. When the student only lightly grabbed her she said, no really grab my hair because this is how in real life someone is going to do it. It reaffirmed that to me that not only does this dojo practice the forms but shows people the real life application in a real way even with younger kids. Other studios I visited either didn't show practical applications or just really let the kids play around without much structure.
The last piece I want to say, is that this dojo is not trying to be a big corporate dojo. If feels like they want to stay small and be more like a family. Everyone knows everyone, the actual dojo is small. When you walk in if feels like it is ran by real people, not someone who owns 20 dojos. It isn't going to be completely immaculate, and they don't have a 3 year black belt program like some schools. But what they do have is family, you make friends, you will learn karate, and become a better person in all aspects.“

12505 W Chinden Blvd, Boise“Master Kim's has been one of the best things we could have ever done for our daughter. Every single one of the instructors are *amazing* and we can see the impact each of them has on her. We appreciate the way that Master Kim incorporates mindset lessons into each session. This has been a key differentiator for us. As someone who grew up with family who did Taekwondo, I can say without a doubt there is something really special about Master Kim's. Here's what I mean: Recently, our daughter has been facing increased angst/feelings of overwhelm in social settings. When this happened as we came in for class, Master Bae got down to her level, looked her in the eyes, put her arm around her, and just spoke to her human-to-human. As a mom, it was a moment that's hard to put into words. It really does feel like a community at Master Kim's, and it's great to see this awesome blend of discipline, respect, compassion---really all of the values they teach---being fully lived out.“
“It's rare these days to find authentic Jeet Kune Do - not just the name, but the method and mindset. In Boise, Idaho training with Sifu Chris Kent has been one of those rare opportunities. Chris is a direct student of Dan Inosanto (Bruce Lee's close friend and protégé), so what we practice is only a generation removed from the source.
JKD is dynamic, it's not a rigid checklist of techniques, it's a way of moving and thinking. In class we train timing, range, and the art of the intercepting fist, but we also learn a way of approaching problems: simple, efficient, honest. That philosophy bleeds out of the school and into life, it sharpens your decisions, your timing, and your confidence.
On top of JKD, Chris teaches Kali/Escrima and real knife work - practical, skillful, and grounded in real application. What stands out most is how Chris teaches: he supports people showing up as themselves, pushes you to improve, and helps you find your personal expression within the art. A teacher like that is rare.
If you want to learn the real thing - technique, mindset, and honest combat methodology with flow reach out to Chris Kent. This is the way of the intercepting fist.“
