“Located in a rural area four miles south of Half Moon Bay, Purissima was one of the earliest settlements on the San Mateo County coast. Spanish soldiers founded the little hamlet before 1820 as an outpost for Mission Dolores in San Francisco, about twenty-five miles to the north. The lush land, ample water, and sunny climate supported the farms that supplied the mission with food. The town grew and, from the late 1840's, after the American annexation of California, continued to prosper as an agricultural community for many years. The first lumber mill was built here and the area noted for its climate and beautiful scenery eventually became somewhat of a resort for pleasure seekers. As competition from the nearby town of San Benito (now Half Moon Bay) increased, the once-thriving village of Purissima began to fade into obscurity. The town's structures were destroyed by winter storms or salvaged for building materials used elsewhere on the coast. Today, nothing remains of the town except the foundation of a one-story schoolhouse and this old overgrown pioneer cemetery marked by crumbling tombstones with nearly unreadable epitaphs.“

I had no idea what to do when a loved one passes, and Paul Larson at The Chapel of the Highlands explained the whole process to me and made it as easy as possible. During this most difficult time Paul was there to help me every step of the way. I called him when my uncle was in hospice, and he told me that when my uncle passes to call immediately, and they would come and remove his remains. He then arranged everything needed for a wonderful service. He contacted the Veterans Administration to arrange a military service, he made the arrangements with the cemetery and the florist so that everything went smoothly at the service, and since my uncle was not religious and had no pastor, he performed a wonderful eulogy at the service. “My dad and I got our plots together about 25 years ago and arranged our cremation together at Neptune at the same time. My mom gave no directions on what she wanted so my sister and I decided to bury her there also, so mom is across a little road from us. My dad and I liked that it was local, private, and not in the fog like so many others – I know it shouldn’t really matter at that time but it did to us now. This historic graveyard is nestled amongst houses in a neighborhood setting hosting Mausoleum’s and graves containing historic local names such as Crocker and Parott’s. Kathy who works there is great. You can find sites for casket grave burial as well as cremation interment burials. Parents of people I grew up with are there as well as my childhood next-door neighbor. I feel like the ground “greenery” around the gravestones and stuff could be kept nicer to make it a little prettier but the location is perfect.“
