“It's funny (not really) how we can take for granted the many movements our bodies make on a daily basis. You never appreciate how wonderfully your body works until you lose some of that functionality and then suddenly you are supremely aware of the stark difference between what you were once capable of and what is now your reality. I have had a few of these awakenings in the past and am grateful to have recovered from them. My most recent was the loss of mobility in my shoulder and the addition of a great deal of pain when trying to use my right arm/shoulder or even to look up above door knob level in a room. I am again a fully functional human! I shuffled into Valley Spinal Care Kierland in a lot of pain and now I am walking without pain. You see when I shuffled in, I looked like a bad impersonation of the hunchback of Notre Dame. The day I shuffled in, they did an xray on me and I couldn't stand straight for it. The x-ray revealed a zig zag in my spine and I don't mean the rolling paper... it was painful just to look at. That twisted mangled version of myself could barely lift his head to look around the room at peoples feet much less be able to see the ceiling. I distinctly remember one day after a session with Demaris Parker and Dr. Serafiniwalking out to my vehicle in considerably less pain and I drove... not slow because I had trouble looking to the right as before but now I could turn my head to see traffic on my right! Just this simple ability returned to me the previous confidence I had and I was able to drive normally! I realized I now had most of my mobility back and how greatly it affects my situational awareness. I am grateful to be able to look up into a tree to see what bird is making that sound or be able to look someone in the eyes, not to mention the ability to look quickly to assess my surroundings. One physical therapist that stood out to me as one of the best I have ever seen is Demaris Parker. He usually goes by 'D' but for anyone that has ever met him you can tell he is there to help you however he can. I felt like I found a friend.
