City of South Houston Animal Control is a place where the staff cares deeply for the animals, treating them as if they were their own pets. Unlike many other city-run shelters, they do not put animals down. They have a variety of dogs and cats that are in need of good homes. Volunteers are regularly at the shelter, and the current staff have been there for a few years. Recently, there have been many changes and improvements. Adopting an animal from the shelter can be a wonderful experience. One individual was lucky to find and adopt their fur baby on Valentine's Day. The staff were helpful with the adoption process and provided information about the animal's history. Despite having just undergone an amputation, the animal was able to adjust and settle into its new home. However, it is worth noting that contacting the non-emergency service of the animal control may result in speaking with an operator who is rude and condescending. One individual had a negative experience when they contacted the service to report a found puppy. Despite the individual's best intentions, it took too long for someone to be sent out to help. It is hoped that the puppy is okay and that the operator receives the help they need, as they do not seem to like animals.
Recently I adopted a dog through the South Houston Animal Shelter. It was the absolute best experience ever! I found my new baby on Petfinder and immediately applied to adopt her. Samantha Zubia was wonderful! She was attentive and helpful and responded to me immediately. She was kind and respectful even when I asked too many questions! LOL! I adopted her across the country. From Texas to Oregon. She was delivered in conjunction with Three Little Pitties rescue. I would give 100 stars if I could. Thank you so very much for all you do!
I have seen a lot of great changes at the South Houston animal shelter. The new animal control officer. Lisa is doing the best she can since she has started cleaning up the previous mess at the shelter.
She has been provided resources/vaccines for people and their animals. I know this for a fact because she helped me out with mine personally.
She has been out and about protecting the animals that are all running loose and in danger, I notified her of a post that was made on two dogs tied to a fence line and she went right away and brought them to safety.
Since this new director has taken over the shelter I have noticed far fewer dogs running loose. I stopped complaining with the previous director because nothing ever happened. Stray dogs and people that let their dogs run free were the norm. But I've noticed a big difference in the past 6-8 months. I can safely walk my dogs now without some loose dogs running up on us.
