I saw a video of Ray Chen trying out some violins and one of them caught my attention. I sent an email asking about the possibility of shipping in Romania, Europe where I live. The next day, I received a response that the Lacey Act requirements make that not possible. I called the store to ask for more information because on the website it was written that they ship worldwide, but a lady answered me to document myself about the Lacey Act on the internet because she does not have time to explain to me that she has a customer in the store who needs her and she simply hung up on me. I had a wonderful experience from start to finish at Fred's fine instrument shop, leading to purchasing a bow that I was exactly looking for. Although I didn't come in with an appointment, Catherine and Fred were so kind & accommodating, and checked in to make sure I was taken care of. Fred has an astonishingly extensive wealth of knowledge on fine instruments & bows, which reminded me of my days spent at top shops in Germany and NYC. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation on fine bows & violins with him and learned a ton on German bow makers.I live 2 hours away from his shop, but will be intentionally going out of my way to make trips out to Fred's shop...read full review
They have a kind, helpful, professional staff. I brought my violin in months ago to be repaired and after my delay picking it up they didn't want to just give it to me until they felt everything was correct. I was in a bit of a rush and couldn't wait for another adjustment so I went back a few days later. They did an amazing job on the fingerboard, bridge, pegs, chin rest, and sound posts. The women helping me even took the time to help me choose a new shoulder rest. Mine was so old and simple I never knew about all the different types of models. Definitely make sure you have time in your day before coming just in case you have to try things out, need an adjustment on a pick up, or just wind up talking to their knowledgable staff. Oh, carry plenty of quarters/dolla bills if you plan on street parking. This is a low minute per quarter section of Philly and your time runs out before you can bat your lashes.
