Elkwood Construction Contractors

“We hired Elkwood Construction, led by Xavier and Walter, for a massive whole-house renovation. The scope included a complete kitchen overhaul (custom stained cabinets, real butcher block countertops), two full bathroom remodels, comprehensive drywall repair & painting, and new vinyl wood flooring throughout.

The quality of work was truly above our expectations, delivering a high-end look while staying within budget. More importantly, the crew worked diligently and consistently until the project was finished (<7 weeks total)—a rarity in our experience with contractors.

The transformation, particularly the complex tub-to-tiled-shower conversion, is stunning. We highly recommend Elkwood Construction for any large-scale home upgrade; they deliver exceptional results and reliability.“

“On 9/3/24, Frost Paving completed the paving of my 3700 sq ft asphalt driveway in Laurel Ridge. The pricing was very fair & the work complied with their written bid. Other bids were only verbal. A-Quality Paving & Grading Contractors

“In summer of 2025, Robert and his crew paved my 300' driveway in Haw Creek; the work was good, the project was on budget and the crew was remarkably fastidious. Given all of this, it is difficult to fathom how this company has racked up so many negative reviews on Google. If I'd read these reviews prior to calling Robert, I'm not sure I would have had the courage to patronize his company.

A word of background: for 14 years, I did marketing (writing, web and photography) for the Marshall-based company French Broad Paving. In the last 20, I've hired pavers a number of times to do work here in Asheville. Cumulatively, I have had almost 1/2 a mile road/ driveway paved. In this time, I've accrued some experience with pavers & paving.

Robert, the owner of A-Quality paving, came to my place and estimated my job in the spring of 2025; he was very thorough and forthcoming about the scope and cost of the proposed work. Robert makes no effort to hide his love for the Lord, nor his work as a preacher (and he is no shrinking violet). As an outsider to this world, I will add that Robert is more Christ-like than most Christians I've come to know, which I find refreshing.

There is an adage in the construction biz that YOU CAN HAVE TWO OUT OF THE FOLLOWING THREE:
You can have it QUICK
You can have it AFFORABLE or
You can have it GOOD.
(But don't expect all three.)

In my experience with this company, I got the last two. Understand; A-Quality Paving works no more than 4-days a week. Pavers don't usually pave when there is rain in the forecast nor can they pave in the coldest part of winter. Add to this the demand for reconstruction post-Helene and… chances are, you are going to wait a while to make it to the top of a paver's list; plan accordingly.

Is their waiting list short? No.
Is the communication great? No.
Is Steve still doing estimating? I don't think so.
Did I get other estimates? Yes; they were 15-20% higher.

Paving is hard, dirty, hot, smelly, physical work. The crews tend to be motley and a little rough around the edges. Not only does Robert manage his crew with 'generous' oversight, but in the thick of it, he's right out there with the crew, sleeves rolled, up barking out orders, running the machines and holding everyone to a high standard. One reviewer mentioned that they actually >>left for the day<< while paving was being done at their property; don't be a knucklehead.

In summary, YES; all those lousy reviews are scary, but perhaps you should call the company, meet Robert face-to-face, get an estimate and make your own conclusions.

I was happy with the work and am glad I hired Robert's company.“
