DBC was referred to me by a friend in 2003. I have since been a regular client. In 2009 I took my then 18 year old Down's Syndrome son who was diagnosed with ITP (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura - low platelet count). My son was treated by a hematologist open to work with us parents who included Dr. DenBoer in our efforts to rid this autoimmune disease. Conventional treatments were not yielding expected results (IVIG infusion, Vincristine, steroid), while the side effects were worse than the symptoms. After three years with not much improvements at platelet counts of an average of 25,000, the hematologist considered my son had chronic ITP. Several months later Dr. DenBoer said to me, "I read in an article that cattles in Michigan suffer from low Iodine. I wonder if animals do, so do humans!" So he suggested Iodine supplements for our son. We gave him 3x a week and after only 2 months his platelet count began to rise to the 40,000 then it steadily rose until it reached around 165,000, which is within normal range. Once a week of Iodine pill became a routine since then, and as of last year, after about 12 year, his platelet count was 235,000 which is his normal count when he was 9 month old. What I appreciate most about Dr. DenBoer is his style of partnership in addressing issues concerning my health. We exchange ideas, we brainstorm for solutions. I had a frozen shoulder once as a result of an accident from playing a racket sport. I had MRI taken, and the orthopedic surgeon recommended that I had another MRI taken, in preparation for a surgery, which he was sure I needed it. I told him I would rather wait and I took the MRI to Dr. DenBoer for his review. His answer was, "The surgery will fix it in a matter of weeks. I can give you exercises that will fix it in a year." I opted for the exercise. I followed his direction faithfully, everyday. One year later almost to the date, I was playing badminton and tennis again. I had tennis elbow, he fixed it in a matter of seconds! Dr. DenBoer's style of practice fits my philosophy: My health is my own responsibility, he provides his medical science knowledge to help me maintain it to the best of my ability.
