About Hilo Medical Center
Hilo Medical Center is the leading provider of inpatient and outpatient care on the Big Island, offering a full range of services and programs on its 20-acre campus. The 157-bed acute care and 35-bed long-term care facility employs 1,100 staff and has a medical staff of 250 community physicians, physician assistants, and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, representing 33 specialties. As a Level III Trauma Center, the hospital's 24-hour emergency room is the second busiest in the state, serving over 49,000 patients annually. Patients praise the knowledgeable and understanding doctors, as well as the helpful and kind support staff. The nursing staff, including the "blonde nurse woman with glasses," have been described as excellent, efficient, and friendly, providing exceptional care. The hospital's cardiology suite has also received positive feedback. While the entrance emergency security was noted as less than ideal, the overall experience at Hilo Medical Center is one of aloha and quality care.
If your loved ones end up here, please, please be very involved with their care. Ask questions. Do research. Insist on speaking to the doctors. Stay by their side as much as possible. Make yourself known and advocate for your loved one's care. While there are some very competent and helpful people here, there are also quite a few incompetent (and downright rude) people who are clearly in the wrong profession.
The administration at this place is dysfunctional. Referrals has taken up to 9 to 10 months before being able to see a doctor. That is a long time to wait when you are sick. That is extremely unethical. Sending a patient home still having three infections was evil. Administration treated me like a stupid peasant. That really showed me the care and love that they have for their patience with this administration. That is exactly how my sociopathic father treated me as a kid. Evil.
The staff there is just the opposite. From the doctors, nurses, nurses aids and housekeeping are friendly and helpful. Good people. Love you all. The st
I ended up here flown in from a cruise ship with a heart attack and they saved my life. Dr. Juneau and Dr. Haynes were knowledgeable and understanding. The support staff was extremely helpful to my family. There are many to thank - Curtis, Dana, Nick and Bart. I have to give a special shout out to Ian W. my nurse who went above and beyond to work with me through some very difficult times. I'm sure there were others whose names I have not remembered or never learned. Thank you all!
