“After my GSD unexpectedly passed away I found myself if a severe downward spiral after realizing how much a service animal really can do for people. After getting back into the VA Healthcare system my counselor recommended I get another service dog asap. They recommended a local trainer and we were able to foster a dog and at least fill the gap for the time being, it didn't take long for me to realize that a GSD is the only dog for me, after doing a search I came across a company in Geneva called K9 candidates -your service dog experts that ended up selling me a sick dog with no health certificate that racked up over $700 in vet bills immediately and didn't have the disposition to be a service animal, they ended up cutting off all communications so I found myself without a dog or my money. You may have seen the story on Ch9 news with Shannon Butler.
After hearing about the story Ernie reached out to me even though he was currently recovering from medial issues related to his deployments.
From the medical center he arranged for me to meet the staff and sit in on a Wednesday Veterans training class. A few days later if was contacted to come back out and meet the puppies on Veterans Day, Shirley, Billy,and Mike obviously not only cared about the Veterans but worked with an organization that has trained hundreds of successful service animals.
After going to some Saturday training classes it became apparent that my learning style and inability to be in larger groups was going to be a problem. At one point I handed him the dog back and left. Ernie then went what I considered to be above and beyond by speaking with me later that day and arranging for me to do one on one training. I can't express my gratitude to Ernie, Shirley, Billy, Mike and the rest of the people for going that extra mile for myself and Radar.“
