“Today, July 28th, 2026, would have been my mother, Norellen Toomey Stokley’s 90th birthday. She died on April 8th 2026, from complications following a broken hip. She lived a full life, but her sudden passing caught our family by surprise. As a gift to her this year, I decided to write a thank-you to Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home. The staff did an incredible job honoring my mother's legacy and helping us navigate our fresh grief.
My mother was an artist, and they hung her artwork throughout the funeral home, a seamless process that was far easier than you would imagine. They talked us through the pricing, published my mom's obituary on social media within 24 hours, and shared a livestream link so friends who couldn't attend could watch live or view the recording later. They also got everything into the newspaper and set up an online floral order link for our guests.
Because my family wanted the service held the same week she passed, a tight timeline, they worked hard to accommodate our needs. On the day of the service, we ran late because my dad forgot his socks and hearing aid, but the staff had everything set up, including microphones and flowers, without us needing to manage a thing. Though it wasn't our home, it felt warm and inviting. In my mom's obituary, I had mentioned how much she loved the color yellow. Seeing that the wallpaper at Shaughnessey was all yellow felt like kismet.
Something you can't pay for or schedule is the quiet, kind conversations that happen while rearranging chairs or placing photos. While nothing could take away the shock and pain for our family, the staff made us feel truly cared for.
With grief comes the unexpected joy of seeing a room filled with family and friends who chose to show up for you. As sad as I was, I knew my mother would be deeply grateful for the service we created together, surrounded by her artwork and loved ones.
Shaughnessey took full responsibility for executing the day so my family could walk away feeling we had honored my mother, without regrets. You can trust them to take care of you in your time of need. We did, and I now remember her funeral as an act of love, not grief.“
