The deck's wood was severely worn, with parts showing termite damage, and the concrete supports underneath were tilted and *cracked*. The whole thing was sitting at an angle and pulling away from the house. We had been putting off the necessary work for fear of the cost, painting over blemishes to fool ourselves into thinking we had more time, but then one of us suddenly stepped through planks of wood (no injuries) and we knew we couldn't delay it any longer (see before photos).

The scheduling was easy, even for my partner and I who have absurdly demanding jobs with absurd hours. They worked with us all along the way.

No, it wasn't cheap, but it was MORE than reasonable for the engineering and sweat, the craft and beautiful woodwork, especially in this fraught economic environment, with high inflation and difficult-to-procure materials. I want to note our location is exceptionally tricky: we live in a 1920s home on a staircase without *any* street access, which means carrying heavy supplies and debris up and down multiple flights of stairs EVERY day, multiple TIMES per day. The crew made dozens of trips a day, back and forth, back and forth. All of this in the middle of unrelenting summer heat. They also had the hillside to build into and a leftover eucalyptus tree trunk (visible in a before photo) to contend with as they got to work. The primary tradesmen at our home to complete the work—project manager/foreman Ángel, plus Raul, Joell, and José—were keen professionals, and continuing to coordinate check-ins with John Simons was a breeze.

Our deck, the whole giant thing, in spite of all the obstacles, was done surprisingly quickly and it's beautiful. In the future we will choose YDB for similar projects, and recommend all our relations do the same.“

“Love, love, love my new Exotic Iron Works gates! I wanted something to pop that was unique on the plain stucco walls and I am thrilled with the outcome! I visited Exotic Iron Works after seeing a gate online and sent pics of my ugly wood gates to Sam to see if he could make them to replace my old ones as soon as I finished doing stucco.
The combo locks are perfect, just what I was hoping for! Three guys came to install, plus Sam. They were professional and nice and answered my questions. One of the guys does the hand painting on the spot after he gives options for color. They also made that panel to match on the big gate; I expected a solid piece but this looks so much better than I anticipated. “As a 20 year Board Member of our HOA, South Point, in San Pedro CA, I was intimately involved with many repair and upgrade projects. One involved a legally required balcony inspection SB-326 and subsequent refurbishment of 55 Owner Balconies including new railings. I had obtained several different bids from contractors due to the size and cost of the project. I did meet with the Owner, Alex Nicolov, of Apex GateWorks among the vendors. From day one, Alex displayed his knowledge and expertise but also gave sound recommendations on how to proceed. Our old railings were removed and the new railings were fabricated ahead of schedule and were ready to install once the balcony construction project was completed. Alex visited the site more than once and even delivered a partial set of railings for visibility to the community. The finished product was beautiful with the speckled black streaks on gray (one of the finish coats that Alex showed us). Ultimately, Alex worked in conjunction with our engineer and the two other companies responsible for our actual balcony deck demo and rebuild. California Decking and Waterproofing and Mota Builders had to demo 55 balcony decks and rebuild them, to code, from the studs. We had to replace full rim joists and sister a lot of 2 * 10's. We even needed new pan flashings installed for all 55 decks. All three companies worked well together - they rebuilt, to code, all 55 Owner balconies. This was a big project, time consuming, expensive, and it was done extremely well from the demo, rebuild, surface finish, and the final railing installation. Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety was on site multiple times and never had any issues with the quality of work being done and approved each phase of the project and the ultimate sign off. I would recommend Alex and his company Apex GateWorks to anyone seeking railing work for their personal or commercial needs.“
