“Great place to train and join the jiu-jitsu community! I started almost 2 years ago at Leon, not knowing what to expect, and I can't believe how much I've learned! Jiu-jitsu is a very intensive sport, but the more you put into your training, the more you can expect to grow.Coach Bill is not only an extremely knowledgeable practitioner -- he has also spent decades as a competitor and coach to his student competitors. He genuinely cares about his team and pushes us all to reach new levels. As an adult woman, it feels great to have developed more confidence in my self-defense skills. I've made lots of friends through training, and all the coaches make sure to prioritize your safety.Overall, training at Leon is a great experience! Hope to see new people on the mat always.“

“I have found Richard's Tai Chi class to be excellent physical exercise and a fun activity that I can do with my husband. Richard is a great instructor and accommodates all ranges of physical ability. I am in pretty good physical condition due to years of ballet training. I had surgery earlier this year and hoped that Tai Chi would be beneficial in my recovery. To my delight, Richard modified the forms so that I could learn them easily despite having limited range of motion. I had planned to go back to my barre classes after I was fully healed. Regrettably, my barre studio closed due to the pandemic, but I am so happy with Tai Chi that I want to continue to learn and grow in my Tai Chi practice.“

“This is a long overdue review. I've been bringing my seven year-old daughter to the kids class for a few months and we both really love it. Sensei Ford is great with the kids and really strikes a perfect balance between serious teaching and playfulness. We tried a couple other places before finding him and none of them worked out -- my daughter has some social issues and severe ADHD and other instructors just couldn't keep her engaged. Sensei ford somehow managed to keep ALL the kids engaged. He is kind, energetic, fun, funny, patient, serious, disciplined, and understanding, all at just the right moments. He coaches the kids well and the room is often filled with laughter while also keeping a sense of purpose and growth (in fact, one might even say 'continuous improvement' as the name says). I hope someday my daughter will move like some of the more advanced kids that have been there a while =o)As an added bonus, there are good sushi, ramen, doughnuts, and a 7-Eleven in the same parking lot. How can you go wrong? Seriously.“

“New breed is a great place to train, they were welcoming from day one it felt like family. The professors are there for you on and off the mats. There's a community among the staff and students. I now have been training for a little over a year now. I am grateful for the influence BJJ has put into my life at work, personal and even among peers. BJJ is a journey, it grows on you, it makes those long days feel easier. To me, my biggest gain is that I am less stressed with life, because I now have an outlet, that I enjoy very much. I navigate problems with more ease and critical thinking. Stop by and take that jump on those mats and have your own experience/journey. Osss!“

“I started attending classes here just a couple months ago and the community here at this dojo is incredibly welcoming and patient, especially for newer students. You'll definitely learn a wide variety of skills, from self defense, sparring, disarming techniques, and of course martial arts forms and techniques. Sensei Marcos and the people here truly want to help you out and will encourage you every step of the way. Sensei Marcos is amazingly skilled and knowledgeable so you're bound to learn something from him, even outside of martial arts. Training here has been hard work and you will be pushed to your limits so be prepared! But do know that, in doing so, Sensei Marcos will help you reach that potential of yours.“

“This is the place to be, Sensei Gary Takemoto and all of the other Blackbelts here bring so much knowledge and hands on training, all in a respectful and professional environment. They are able to handle Judokas at all different skill levels at every practice due to the volume of Blackbelts to learn from. You'll get personalized attention so you can develop your skills at a pace that works for you. All this while still providing a close team / family environment. I can't wait until my son is old enough to join the team as well.“

“After training at UC Berkeley until my Red Belt, I wanted to continue my Tae Kwon Do training since I was thisclose to my Black Belt. Also, it would be a great way to continue working out. After doing some extensive online research, I chose Young Yee Martial Arts. Why did I choose this school? For a couple of reasons: 1. I thought it would be a great opportunity to train under a 9th degree Grand Master. 2. It's fairly close to my apartment, about a 15 minute drive. 3. It had a nice website and a great review written about it. 4. Grand Master Young Yee gave me a discount! Compared to my training at UC Berkeley, the training here is a lot less vigorous. The concentration is not on sparring but rather on form, technique, and philosophy. Also, it's a totally different atmosphere since most of the students are little kids rather than college students. It took a lot of getting use to but it's a great experience. The main downside of this school is that it lacks participation in competitions. After injuring my ankle last year, I decided that I would rather teach students than compete for my own personal health so it doesn't bother me. Also, with so many students, it's hard to separate the belt ranks so a lot of the training is general. This means that the higher belts do not have a lot of time to work on advanced techniques as they have to do basic techniques with the lower belts. Also, the testing fees may be a bit pricey compared to those at UC Berkeley but I hear that it is pretty average among private martial arts schools. The main upside is that Grand Master Young Yee is very knowledgeable and has a lot of experience under his belt. He knows how to work with children and has a great sense of humor. Also, despite his age, he is a very mobile. I might be a bit biased because I am now a black belt and a part-time instructor at this school. However, I believe that this is a great place to learn Tae Kwon Do, especially for someone who may not want to enter competitions so soon. I don't know how long I will continue to help Grand Master Young Yee teach but as long as I'm there you should all check it out!“

“Love the jiu-jitsu classes taught by professor Angel Diaz. For the gi and no-gi classes Professor Angel does a great job at teaching and creating a welcoming environment for everyone. Would love to also have a jiu-jitsu fundamentals class for people who are looking to start their jiu-jitsu journey but are unsure about joining the all levels class. Maybe a longer or extra gi class added to the schedule would be awesome too. Also big thanks coach Oliva for being very helpful and attentive during her kickboxing classes. I personally didn't really enjoy striking as much before as I do now thanks to her.“

“Grand master Kwon is an excellent role model to our Long Beach community. He teaches respect, humility and discipline. I attend his class along with my two teenage boys and my 9 year old daughter. I have seen tremendous improvement in our physical and mental abilities. I highly recommend his class.“
