“I’ve been affiliated with Epperson Bros Kenpo Karate for over a decade through the Portland Kenpo Karate Dojo, and I can honestly say this community has become family to me. I’ve attended Sensei Chuck’s seminars for more than ten years, often joined by Sensei Bruce Epperson, Sensei Joe Sanchez, Sensei Jason Shoemaker, and many other high-ranking black belts who bring an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience each time they visit.

Every seminar is a treat — a rare opportunity to train directly under instructors who not only teach the art, but embody the spirit and philosophy of Kenpo. The lessons go far beyond memorizing techniques; they emphasize why movements work — the reasoning behind angles, off-stepping, and counter-attacking from both the inside and outside of an opponent’s centerline. Over the years, I’ve developed real understanding in thrust and snap kicks, vertical and thrust punches, knee checks, compounding motions, and deflection angles.

Their sparring sessions are practical and dynamic, integrating real-world concepts like boxing combinations (jab, cross, uppercut) along with slips, bobs, and weaves. You don’t just learn to fight — you learn to think, adapt, and stay composed.

Sensei Chuck’s Kenpo Kali instruction adds another powerful layer, combining Filipino knife and stick fundamentals that enhance timing, flow, and precision. It’s one of the most unique and valuable cross-training experiences I’ve ever had.

Beyond the physical training, the philosophy taught here carries over into everyday life — discipline, respect, awareness, and integrity. Every instructor and student I’ve met through this dojo is honorable, humble, and dedicated.

After more than ten years, I can say with confidence: this is more than a martial arts school — it’s a lifelong family and a path of personal growth.“

“I trained with Master Chuck Duran, and his brother Al Duran in the early 2000's. I started when I was 10 years of age, which at the time was rare as the school did not allow many youngsters to train due to the intensity and formality of the traditional style being offered. Many years later, the only things that have changed are inclusivity (all ages are welcome and taught to at their individual level), a nice new padded floor, and the skill level of Master Chuck. I cannot say enough about this man, and so will leave it to you to explore his genuine heart of kindness, and firm depth of knowledge and skill in this art. Let me be clear YOU WILL NOT FIND A BETTER INSTRUCTOR or a better school for that matter in the Chico area, or anywhere I've been, and I've lived all over the country and world. If you are seeking the magic you've known exists in the martial arts as part of the internal development of qi (energy) and how that cultivation actualizes in a master, you will not be disappointed. The power of internal qi cultivation is not to be downplayed, although, admittedly, it is very rare to actually find as an expression of a very functional martial art. If you are looking for more than a workout (although you will certainly get one), if you are a seeker that knows one must look inward in order to see anything outward, you have come to the right place. Welcome home.“
