We've lived in Madison for a few years now and have been attempting to get back into Iyengar Yoga (which we did while we lived in Las Vegas and it helped our pain soo much). I have some chronic sciatica pain that flares up every now and then and lately I've had some ankle pain. I refuse to turn to pain medication because I don't want to be dependent on them and I refuse to have any surgery because surgery isn't a good long-term solution. And my husband has some chronic back pain and he won't turn to pain medication for the same reasons. Enter: yoga! (More specifically, Iyengar Yoga) We did the Level I Iyengar on Sunday with Katie. I loved the unpretentious atmopshere the room has. Katie was very welcoming and understanding of the limitations we have due to pain issues, which, from what I understand, is important for an Iyengar class. My husband had very positive thoughts about it, which I felt was important because he has training (to become a yoga teacher) in this. I think the thing I felt was a bit of a drawback for me was we didn't keep the poses nearly as long as I wouldve liked to feel the stretch. We did do more complicated poses (it was a a standing pose class this time) and, per my husband, who has training in Iyengar Yoga, he said that because we did more complicated poses, we didn't keep to keep the positions long. We plan to go more as our schedule allow!

I was amazed at how many teachers from other studios and yoga types take classes here. The Co-op's teachers are trained in the Iyengar tradition give very detailed instructions - you learn so much about your body and mind.

I recently travelled to Madison for a work meeting and had the opportunity to take four yoga classes at the Yoga Co-op of Madison with three different teachers. This is an outstanding Iyengar Yoga studio. The instruction is expert, the classes are small, and the atmosphere is quite friendly. The studio is bright, clean, and attractive. There is a bathroom and a changing room. They have mats and props for students to use. This is a co-op so you pay the instructor directly (cash or check). There is a reduced fee for members of the co-op (anyone can join) and you can also get a ten class pass. If you haven't done Iyengar yoga before it would be good to take a level 1 class or a beginner's series. Also, you will probably be asked if you have any injuries or issues when you show up for class. Don't be put off by this; it is not meant to be intrusive! The teacher will modify postures specifically for whatever injures or limitations you might have to prevent any further injury and to help you recover. The instructors here helped me work on my handstand! I am looking forward to my next work trip to Madison so I can visit the studio again.
