6416 Grovedale Dr STE 302B, Alexandria“First I didn’t intent to start with martial arts again, but when I saw the FB ad, I actually thought "well, why not". I didn’t know a lot about Karate, except for that there are different styles like Shotokan or Kyokushin, but I didn’t know any details. They explained that they were teaching a style (Shorin Ryu) with older roots that would come from Okinawa. The centerline orientation and the more deflecting than blocking movements actually reminded me of Wing Chun, what I used to do a long time ago. Virginia Dojo’s aim is to train adults. Competitions or movements that require acrobatic skills are not performed here. Foot techniques are also set lower, which reminded me of Wing Chun as well. Teenagers who want to let off steam with their peers would be bored here. It is a school for people who are already further along in life, a school which is run conscientiously and also with a certain seriousness, but reasonably and calmly. Unfortunately, I've had several bad experiences in Wing Chun with "sifus" who showed off their skills on the students and put them down instead of teaching them things. That's a shame, because I really liked Wing Chun. I've only been at Virginia Dojo for a good month now, so I'm still a complete white belt noob, neither do I have experience with other Karate styles, but I feel comfortable there, I like the atmosphere and thus can recommend the place with 5 stars if you're aged 30+ or don't have championship ambitions.“

5187 Waterway Dr, Dumfries“My son has been going here since Jan 2024 when he was 5 yo and we’ve had a wonderful experience. Grand Master Kim is very hands-on with the kids and cares deeply about their development. There are several instructors during each class working with the kids on their skills and even some 1:1 if they need additional support. Everyone is very patient, though strict. I highly recommend this studio to anyone who is serious about TKD and want their kids to learn discipline, respect, and self confidence.“

Family owned and run, Yong In does a great job of welcoming new and returning students under their wing.

The school teaches four Korean martial arts styles: Taekwondo, Judo, Hapkido, and Sword. It has a before and after school program for kids, as well as summer, winter, and spring break day camps. There are numerous social events that help the students, families, and staff connect with each other, and additional special training opportunities are available. I earned my black belt in Hapkido here, and now my son is learning Taekwondo. We both love OSA!“

“My relationship with Lead By Example Martial Arts is not that of a student, but rather of someone with a business relationship with the school's leadership. Our interactions with the leaders--particularly Janet--have been great. They are professional, responsive, innovative, kind, and extremely passionate about providing their students with the best experience and tools. Based on our professional relationship, I know they care deeply for their students and their experience. I would recommend them to anyone looking for martial arts instruction in the area.“
