I have been looking for a new barber in Nashville. Yesterday, I gave Black Heart a try. When I arrived, I was greeted and offered water. A few minutes later, I met Shawn, who would cut my hair. He was thorough, informative and overall did a great job. So far, so good.

But when I went to pay, I had what I can only describe as a strange interaction with the owner, Ryan.

First, I asked the girl at the desk about the discount I saw online. She said she didn’t know anything about a discount but would be happy to ask.

Ryan came over and I explained that when I booked the haircut, I was offered a $5 discount for paying with my bank the first time. He looked very confused and said he had no idea what I was talking about. He kind of chuckled at the idea of there being a discount.

I tried to show him on my phone but I couldn't find it. He said they have used the same system for the last five years and have never offered a discount. He was skeptical, but told me if I found it later to send it to him and ended with a “Thanks, buddy!”

A few minutes later, I found the discount again and emailed it to him. (See attached image). He responded that afternoon: “That looks like a $5 rebate credit thing from your bank.” Except that, as you can see, I hadn’t selected my specific bank yet.

He went on: “Have you read the terms there to see what exactly it is saying?
Because they can’t be voluntarily offering a discount for us haha I think it’s more of a credit situation with them.
Let me know what you find out.”

The $5 is the least of my concerns. If you can’t afford a full-price haircut here, you’re probably going to Scout’s.

What bothers me is that I was gaslit, and then when I showed proof, he asked me to research the problem for him.

Sir, this is your website. This is your problem. If your website offers someone a $5 discount, you honor it. As someone who also owns a business and runs a website, I take responsibility for what my website tells my clients. And it’s certainly not worth losing someone over $5 when they’re going to pay me $60 twice a month for as long as they live in Nashville.

And even if you don’t believe someone when they tell you there was a measly ONE-TIME $5 discount on your website, why not just say, “You know what— let me take care of that for you” instead of debating them, making the feel stupid and then asking them to investigate the problem for you?

Anyway, I’m still looking for a new barber, even though Shawn did a great job.

First time customer here. Booked a haircut with Shawn. He paid attention to exactly what I was asking for and delivered a great cut. Will definitely come back my next time in town.

I was really excited to schedule an appointment with John online until it asked me to pay for the whole appointment upfront — asked for a tip as well.

What kind of place does this?

I have never been asked to pay for a service before it even happens, and the audacity to ask for a tip is crazy to me.

    Hell to the no!

Shawn is an amazing barber and a solid dude. I came in with little to no plan and left feeling confident and sharp. Seriously was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a barbershop.

Had an amazing experience with Shawn at Blackheart! His attention to detail and precision make him a step above the rest. Having a wavy texture to my hair - I’ve had many haircuts that left me disappointed, but now after getting my second cut with Shawn I know he’s consistent and tailors the cut to different styles of hair. A true master of his craft!

On two separate occasions, I have shown two different barbers photos of a haircut I wanted and received a haircut that looked nothing at all like the photo I showed. They each cut over an inch of length off that I did not ask for, both times. At my last haircut, the barber strangely remarked, "every time you come here, your hair gets shorter and shorter." Why does that happen? I told him it was not what I wanted, and I wasn't happy about it. Also during my last haircut, a prospective client called the front desk and asked if the shop specializes in a particular kind of cut. My barber and the barber who ruined my hair last time made some snarky remarks to the front desk about the person on the phone and their requests. Seems like things have gone downhill since Hunter left. Not worth the $60+

Just popped into this spot for a beard trim before a wedding. I think my barbers name was Shawn, and he was absolutely awesome! Super quick beard trim and it looks great!

Resident of Nashville for 10 years. Best barbershop in Tennessee. Skilled barbers, experienced, friendly. The top of the pack. I appreciate all they do and their team. Highly recommend.
