About MUSC Health Institute of Psychiatry
MUSC Health Institute of Psychiatry provides access to the latest evidence-based practices for patients and caregivers. Recognized as Hospital of the Year by the National Alliance on Mental Health South Carolina chapter multiple times, the institute is known for its commitment to mental health care. Patients express mixed feelings about their experiences. Many highlight the support and professionalism of specific therapists, such as Dr. Joseph Redding and Kristen Shrum, noting their compassionate approach and willingness to listen. However, some patients report frustrations with the front office staff, describing them as rude and unhelpful. Issues with appointment management have also been mentioned, including no-show penalties that can lead to being dropped from programs, which some patients feel is unfair. The facility itself is accessible, with friendly security staff and convenient parking options. Patients appreciate the lobby amenities, like snack machines and the collection of Valentine cards for those in care. While some have had negative experiences with disorganization during inpatient stays, others believe that the staff's efforts to help patients with complex issues can make a significant difference. Overall, while there are areas for improvement, many patients believe that the institute offers valuable support for those seeking to manage their mental health challenges.
Poor communication and handling of patients , they prescribed my young adult daughter a meditation that conflicts with family history, also released her from care to a harmful controlling boyfriend , while she was clearly not of sound mind.
I traveled to MUSC for the first time today for business purposes. I was lost and had six heavy bags with me. The Nurse Manager, Claudia, from Unit 3 North of the Institute of Psychiatry approached me to offer help and spent approximately two hours assisting me. She certainly has numerous responsibilities, so I am especially grateful that she took the time. I am impressed with her efforts to exceed the highest standards of care and service. MUSC is fortunate to have such an outstanding leader. I would appreciate it if Claudia could be recognized for her endless compassion and dedication.
I’ve been a patient here (Daniel Island location Primary Health with Dr Hund) for some time, and I want to be very honest about my experience. Dr. Hund is a wonderful doctor in person —knowledgeable, compassionate, and attentive. I have always felt heard and respected during my actual appointments.
Unfortunately, the office communication has been extremely disappointing. I have been corresponding for over a week trying to get an important medication refill. Over the last few days, I made it very clear that this was an emergency and that I was struggling with my mental health — and I was still blatantly ignored. This is now the second serious issue I’ve had...read full review
