Discriminatory Teaching Practices at Westlake Music Academy I was shocked and disappointed to experience blatant discrimination from Ryan, the drum teacher at Westlake Music Academy. My son, who has ADHD, mild Autism, and is Indian, was removed from his drum class to accommodate a Caucasian student. Initially, Ryan had agreed to work with my son, but suddenly canceled his spot without discussion. This unacceptable behavior is a clear case of racism and ableism. I strongly advise parents to consider other music schools that value inclusivity and equal opportunity.

At 63 and newly retired, I fully leaned into the baby-boomer cliché of “I’m going to learn guitar.” What I didn’t expect was to find a place like Westlake Music Academy.
Tom never treated me like a cliché. He shared my excitement, believed in me when I didn’t always believe in myself, and made learning both fun and meaningful. After a year of lessons, I’m genuinely enjoying it—and actually playing the guitar.
My wife, who had some early doubts (and fears about what she’d be hearing), now tells friends and family she loves having music in the house. That says it all.
I’ve also just started voice lessons with Albert. After two lessons he knows he has his work cut out for him, but his energy and encouragement make it exciting to step outside my comfort zone.
Shout-out to Emily at the front desk as well. Watching her help students, it’s clear she treats everyone not as customers but as part of a family of musicians.
If you’ve ever thought it might be “too late” to start music, Westlake Music Academy will prove you wrong.

There’s something quietly powerful about Westlake Music Academy. Tucked along Detroit Road, it doesn’t shout for attention—it earns it through consistency, care, and a genuine love for teaching. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone returning to music after years away, this school meets you with respect and warmth.

Ryan the violin instructor is very patient and encouraging. My daughter has improved very much since beginning lessons with him just a few months ago. 5/5 would recommend 😀

If you wondering where to go to learn how to play an instrument, look no further. This academy is so welcoming, friendly and full of musical knowledge! Our 9 year old son has been taking guitar lessons with John for a little over a year. He has gained so much confidence through his lessons, he even voluntarily took his guitar to school to play for his 3rd grade class! We are very grateful that we chose WMA and will continue as long as they’ll have us.

We have had nothing but the best experience at Westlake Music Academy!! James, at the front desk, was extremely helpful in getting us set up with an instructor. Clara is amazing! She’s patient, knowledgeable, and takes her time with her students. We highly recommend WMA!!

My son loves his guitar lessons with John. John is patient, open and willing to give James the chance to explore his favorite songs and helps build his confidence to play himself!
