“Lumie is an upscale salon in South Orange. It has an open, airy, clean design. Having now used their services for about a year, I wholeheartedly recommend their services, especially for color and curly hair. Reflecting South Orange and Maplewood, their clientele is multi-racial as is their staff. Having spent years blow drying my hair straight, or sort of straight, I wanted to go back to my natural wavy/curly hair and correct my color. My natural color is medium brown but now is about half gray. For years, I'd colored it a dark auburn, but recently it had become unattractive, sort of harsh looking. Plus the salon I was using while friendly and reasonably priced had little experience in reviving curly hair. I have only had cut, color and highlights with Kosia, the owner. As a new client, we had a consultation. She examined my hair and carefully listened to what I wanted. We reviewed a book of hair color samples; I picked out a color. To set expectations, Kosia told me to take at least two coloring sessions before my hair would match the color I'd selected. She was right. Yes, my hair, when cut properly is curly. We both ended up experimenting with various products to find one that worked consistently well with my hair. Since waiting for color to set in is inherently boring, I spend a lot of time either reading or looking at the other hairdressers and their clients. I've rarely seen anything that doesn't look really good. I've also had my hair highlighted, and unlike prior experiences, the highlights blended very well with my hair so I only need to do this every other appointment. Prices are moderate for a high end salon in Essex County NJ. For example, my Rezo cut is between $100 to $200 at comparable NJ places and far higher in NYC. (Trust me, I checked). I pay $110 with the owner. To be honest, I was used to paying a lot less, but my hair did not look nearly as good. Every place else that provided similar services is roughly the same price or more. My hair looks great! The color is just what I wanted and I now have wavy curly hair. Really cannot recommend highly enough.“

After watching Tiana’s page for a few months and seeing her amazing work and evident knowledge about natural hair, I decided to pull the trigger.Booking: Booking was fast and easy through the online platform she uses. The prices are very reasonable and she had pretty good availability. She was even flexible with her weekend booking policy for me, which I appreciated. After submitting the appointment request, she’s very quick with responding to your request and any questions you may have. I don’t recall paying any deposit upfront, but I think I had to just put a card on file. You’ll also receive automated reminders and confirmation of your appointment from the platform which I liked as well.Appointment: Firstly, the salon is absolutely magnificent. It was clean and quiet when I arrived for my 9am appointment. It was so nicely decorated and each stylist has their own “room” complete with everything they need to tend to their client. (I’m not sure about the parking situation, but if I recall correctly there is some available nearby.)I arrived to the salon about 10-15 minutes before my appointment and Tiana was able to get started with me right away. The entire appointment (silk press, deep condition, and trim) took maybe 2 hours or so , which was longer than anticipated, but my hair is very thick and long, which extended the time. She works very efficiently and quickly. During the appointment we chatted a little, but I specifically appreciated the little tips she gave me and that she was able to answer questions about my hair. By the time we were finished my hair was beautifully transformed. She absolutely killed the silk press. My hair had so much volume, shine, and looked healthier than it had in YEARS.Style lifespan and hair reverting: To my surprise, my silk press lasted two weeks and could’ve lasted even longer if I had touched it up. I had no problems with scalp dryness, itchiness, or anything which tells me she uses high quality products. My hair reverted back to my normal 4c/4b curls literally after 30-60 seconds of rinsing my hair. My hair reverting back to its natural state is the one thing I feared the most after being natural for over 7 years. However, I had NO HEAT DAMAGE after going to Tiana whatsoever. I was also so surprised at how manageable my hair was and how little hair I lost during wash day. (Normally I suffer from severe shedding/breakage and lose a lot of hair during wash day.) She gave me an AMAZING trim that I talk to everyone about. I cannot get over how nice of a job she did and cannot wait to go back to her again. I can’t recommend her highly enough.If you’re hesitant and skeptical like I was when looking for a hair stylist, going with Tiana is a great choice. She’s a pro!“
