I determined that salvaged encaustic tiles were the ideal material for the hearth I was building in our 1920's catskill cottage. I hit the 8x8 tiles I bought with 60 grit paper with a random orbital sander, and used a quality stone sealer on top. I am so happy I came here - it's worth the trip just to take a look at all the beautiful inventory.
