“I've been loyal to my barber on Trent Road, Buddy Cox, for years. He’s in his 90s now and working fewer days, and the past couple weeks I just couldn’t seem to catch him when he was in.
Today I needed a reliable backup.
I knew what I didn’t want. Not the chain shops, and not the polished “hipster” places charging $40–60 for a haircut and selling a kind of nostalgia that doesn’t feel real. It’s not who they are, it’s what they’re selling. All image, not much substance.
I was downtown and stopped into one place. Opened the door and a dog started barking at me. The barber said he only takes appointments and maybe next Tuesday. No thanks.
Then I remembered Service Barber Shop.
It’s set in what looks like an old 1950s house on the edge of an industrial part of town. Been there since the mid-90s. Simple. No nonsense.
When I walked in, Gary Hudson was finishing up with a client. I’d been riding around with the windows down and was about two weeks overdue, looking rough. I asked if he had time for a shaggy head of hair. He laughed and said always.
After a short wait, I sat down. We talked the whole time like old friends. Local people, places, things you only know if you’ve been around awhile.
For $20, I got a great haircut and beard trim, but more than that, I felt like I belonged there.
No fluff, no act. Just honest work and real conversation.
I told him about my loyalty to Buddy, and how long I’d been going to him. He told me he inherited the shop from his dad, and that kind of loyalty meant something to him too. He understood.
Now I’ve got loyalty to both of them.
I’ll split my haircuts between Buddy and Gary.
