I can't believe how rude the people are at this practice. It's all gone sour since Dr. Thomkin died and corporate medicine took over. If you want to see a doctor about a suspicious lesion, you better make an appointment now for 2024. And you won't get a reminder for the appointment because it will have been entered into their computer calendar incorrectly, but it will be YOUR fault you missed the appointment just because they can not be accountable for their clerical mistakes. I guess we will be getting a bill for their incompetence. Whoever is answering the phone over there needs lessons in compassion.

I've been to this practice twice. The first was a fairly good experience. Then, they were bought by a corporate medical group. The second visit (annual check) was far less impressive. The choices for dermos locally are pretty limited. I'm going back for a third visit to this practice. My impression is that the practice is not very personable and they're all about getting you in and getting you out as fast as they can. I don't enjoy feeling like my insurance card is more important than I am. But, that's what it feels like going to this practice. If I don't have a better experience with this next visit, I'll be looking for another practice, perhaps up in Chesapeake.

I have been a patient of this dermatology practice under its various names for about 25 years and have had very satisfactory experience with several fine dermatologists on the staff. As a person whose work is done outdoors in the sun I've had the chance to meet many skin care professionals. Last month when I went in for what has become more or less routine maintenance I found that the practice has been taken over by a large organization that obviously views its patients as nothing but Income opportunities. That was made painfully apparent by the new doctor who got in and out as quickly as possible, squirting a few quick spritzes of liquid nitrogen, prescribed a month's treatment of flourouricil, and left after handing me about two days' worth of cleanser and moisturizer and brief instructions. During the second week of applying the medication to my scalp I developed a serious reaction. I telephoned the office twice to seek advice but had to leave messages both times for a voice that assured me I would be called back promptly. When my symptoms grew much worse the following day I realized these clowns were not going to be of any use so I went to my family doctor who immediately took me off the medication and cleaned up the results of their incompetence. Needless to say I won't be going back to them and I certainly wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Doctors are competent but the administrative staff is awful. Their handling of insurance issues has brought us to tears more than once in the past year.

I have been going to Tidewater Skin Care for many years and consider then to be a acceptable doctors, EXCEPT when you get violently ill, with Shingles, at age 72, and not only will they NOT TRY to fit you in but they WILL NOT prescribe a pain relieving cream over the phone and THEY WON'T USE TELEMED even in an emergency such as SHINGLES in someone over 70 years of age with a FEVER OVER 100! I thought TIde Water Skin Care was my Dermatologist, and would phone in something as benign as a pain relief cream BUT WAS I WRONG!!!

On a recent follow up visit to the Southern Shores office, a nurse, not sure of name, but had a cast on her arm, enters the room and starts right off super snarky. I was to call in with some information after our previous visit. The conversation went as follows:Nurse- Do you even have a number you use?! We left you messages trying to get that info. Me- Yes, and I did call back and left a message on your voicemail with said info.Nurse- No you didnt! We would have gotten it!Me- Well, I did. There is obviously some sort of communication issue. I went to get the prescription that was supposed to be called in the next day, and it was never called in. I also left another voicemail, because I never get a person to answer when I call, asking about the refferral my other daughter was supposed to recieve, and never heard back. Nurse- We don't even give referrals...Thank goodness, at this point Doctor Heffernan-Stroud walked in because at this point both nurse and I were hot. I didn't appreciate basically being called a liar twice, the entire time with a snarky attitude! Doctor H heard mention of the referral upon walking in, took over the conversation and updated me about it. After nurse left the room, doctor H apologized for her, which I appreciated, but was very unfortunate she had to do that. Giving 3 stars because i really like the doctor, but the communication problem at this office along with the employment of snarky nurse, is a huge frustrating disappointment.

Very kind and caring! I have been going here for over a year now and they are always kind, professional and courteous. They felt my deductible my insurance charge was too high so the lowered it by $100, wow! I really appreciate them looking out for my health and my money, thank you.
