I read an article about this gym recently where they describe their business model as centering around community. I've been going here for six months or so, and I like it. I like it a lot. I enjoy coming here because the workouts are hard and that's what I'm looking for. I like the trainers. They help me with my form without making me feel like an idiot because I'm not doing it right -- shout out to Mark who has always been kind and helpful. But I have never felt a sense of community here. Other people don't talk to me, or make me feel included. There are people who are obviously long-timers who know each other but make no effort to reach out to new people. Someone cheered me on the other day when I had to stop running and walked -- I think it was the first time anyone had done that. I'm not sure why they bill themselves as community based. What exactly are they doing to intentionally build community?

I hobbled into UNDERGROUND FITNESS a little over a year ago. After thirteen plus years doing CrossFit, my body was banged up and hurting. It didn’t help being 65+ years young. At my old gym, I had been doing CrossFit WODs believing “no pain, no gain”.
The experienced and supportive coaches at Underground work with you to modify/scale your workout for your fitness level and objectives. The programming is varied and very well thought out. Daily workouts may include cardio, strength training, conditioning or endurance. The equipment is well maintained, very organized and always CLEAN!!
Today after completing almost 250 classes at Underground, I no longer have to hobble across the gym floor and have been able to incorporate running again in my workout!!
I came to Underground looking for a community of like minded individuals looking to stay active and get fit. Not only did I find a great gym, I found a wonderful family of friends!!

After years of getting fluffy and weak, I was nervous about going to a gym, especially one where my inexperience would be so visible. First day in October 2025, I was welcomed by everyone and my insecurities vanished. We show up. We push ourselves as hard as we can. We give each other high fives when it's all over. I came looking for a healthier lifestyle. What I found was a community, and confidence, and grit that I didn't know I had. It is never too late to start and you will be so glad you did.

This gym is fantastic! The coaches are all amazing and supportive, and come up with unique, fun and challenging classes. The quality and variety of equipment is amazing. The members and all so nice and create an atmosphere that is not competitive but one of comrades. I highly recommend this gym for people of all fitness levels.

I moved back to Asheville about six months ago and tried out several gyms around town while figuring out where I fit best. After working with a personal trainer for about five years, Underground Fitness ended up being my favorite by far out of all gyms I visited. The community is welcoming, the workouts are challenging but approachable, and it genuinely feels like a place that wants you to succeed. I’m so grateful I found this gym and community.
