I should have trusted my instincts the first time.
Reading another mother’s review here was extremely validating, because her experience mirrors exactly what my daughter went through.
My daughter was 9 years old at the time and the way her hair was spoken about caused real emotional harm. Her hair was repeatedly described as “unmanageable,” including in front of another client. Those comments hurt my child’s feelings and made her feel insecure about her natural hair something no child should experience in any professional setting.
What made this especially painful is that this treatment came from Shade, the owner, a Black woman and a Black-owned business a space where my child should have felt understood, affirmed, and safe. Instead, she left feeling ashamed of her hair.
Our appointment was pushed back twice, seemingly to avoid washing her hair, despite that being a service offered and booked. When we did come in, our scheduled time was not respected, and another client’s hair was prioritized ahead of my child’s appointment.
There were continued negative remarks about my daughter’s hair, visible hesitation to provide the service, and attempts to upsell products instead of focusing on the appointment that was already scheduled. If someone does not have the experience, patience, or confidence to work with a child’s natural hair, that should be communicated honestly not projected onto the child.
What concerns me most is that this reflects a larger issue of professionalism and leadership within the salon. The tone and behavior set the environment, and in this case, it resulted in a child being emotionally affected. After repeated rescheduling, lack of professionalism, and excuses to avoid providing the service, I ultimately cancelled the appointment altogether.
I do want to say that I wish Alexis was still working here. She was patient, kind, and always treated my daughter with care and respect. Unfortunately, she no longer works here.
I’m sharing this because this does not appear to be an isolated experience. Parents deserve stylists who are respectful, skilled, and gentle especially when working with children. No child should leave a hair appointment feeling ashamed or insecure about their hair particularly in spaces that claim to serve and represent our community.

Shade is amazing to work with and the only stylist in Roch I trust to do alternative[Alt] hairstyles. She listens and never judges on refs.

I was hesitant to chemically treat my super curly coily hair and I am soo happy I went to Shade, you can tell she is highly experienced with diverse hairtypes, I could not find anyone in town that felt confident with my hair. The results are beyond what I ever expected! So thoughtful and kind I am looking forward to coming back when I need a touch up! ☺️

If I could give a lower Number I would. From calling my child’s hair unmanageable, To Telling me her mother, that other kids don’t cry in her chair so she’s not sure why this one is. I don’t know why I would care about other kids, And I’m not sure why you are not concerned about the kid that’s in your chair currently who is crying. No, she’s not tender headed I have as a nonprofessional , Detangled her hair and blow dried it for someone to braid it. She has this mantra that she says” I’m not even brushing her hair. I don’t know why she’s crying” After she had just taken the brush out of her hair. I’m sure other Mom’s have heard this before because I heard it three years ago when she got her first haircut and I didn’t learn my lesson then. You can’t claim to say that you know how to do natural hair while wearing a wig constantly. And cannot detangled a mixed child’s hair. The cut was terrible. The professionalism left when I was telling my kid that if it hurts too much, she doesn’t have to continue because she doesn’t have to. It’s just Hair. You can’t claim to know how to do natural hair, but don’t know how to wash someone’s hair properly. This idea that people who claim to know how to do hair Wanna give you a negative lecture about about your Hair to sell you their product is insidious. I came here for a haircut, a shampoo Wash. Focus! You said you could offer those, Why are you complaining before you even start to work on her hair? Basically not wanting do the the wash/shampoo part! I sense I sensed her hesitation with my daughter’s hair and I told her she doesn’t have to do it if she doesn’t believe that she can . So when you choose to continue, it means that you think you have the Skills. Save your money Rochester now has more places for people of color to get their hair done. We have options… She could be perfect for other people. But too bad experiences tells me others probably have had more.
