“Trigger Warning--mention of SA. I'm a woman who dealt with repeated sexual abuse as a child. Internal exams are very triggering to me--so I can go years in between appointments trying to get myself mentally prepared to see a doctor. I've moved in recent years and needed a new gynecologist. My GP recommended Women's Health Specialists, and I'm so grateful that they did. My provider listened patiently and with compassion to my issues and really worked with me to make sure I was comfortable and calm. (Anti-anxiety medication the night before and during my appointment definitely helped as well). My new provider didn't tell me to "just get over it" or "calm down--you're making this worse for yourself" as I had been with other doctors. This is something I'm sure many other women in similar situations have dealt with and end up giving up on going to these appointments--putting their health in jeopardy. I wish all doctors received more training on how to help women with trauma deal with this issue. I am so grateful to Women's Health Specialists of Frederick and highly recommend them to everyone!
