“My husband and I have only been in Milford for eight years, and we were unfamiliar with the funeral homes in the area. When my husband passed away in May, I had to scramble to find a place to handle the cremation. Buma-Sargeant Funeral Homes was mentioned by several friends and kept coming up in my research. I made the call, and it was definitely the right call.
Buma-Sargeant went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and taken care of. My husband was what is called a direct cremation. There is no funeral, memorial or viewing. The interaction with the funeral home is limited. But that never stood in the way of them helping me through a difficult process. I spoke with Jim Burma twice, once before they came for my husband – explaining step by step what to expect when they came to pick my husband up. And again, when a few details needed clarification. He was kind and caring. He never once rushed me or made me feel less of a client because we chose direct cremation. His staff was equally compassionate and professional.
When I went to pick up my husband’s ashes, I got there far later than I was supposed to and they appeared to be closed. However, I encountered Jim’s mother who actually lives in the house. I don’t know for sure, but I believe she is retired from the business. That did not stop her from taking the time to bring me my husband’s ashes. She also took time out of her own day to talk with me. We shared some of our mutual experiences with the loss of a beloved spouse. She told me about the things that helped her cope. She went above and beyond simple courtesy to a place of genuine compassion.
As a retired pastor, I have been on “the other side” of the process when a family loses someone they love. I knew what to expect, but that doesn’t change the impact when it is your loved one. My experience, over the years, with funeral homes has generally been positive. But at Buma-Sargeant, being the people who take care of our loved ones on the last day of their life is not a job. It is a calling. And Buma-Sargeant embraces their calling with a grace and compassion that makes the process less devastating. “The death of a loved one is extremely difficult, a very sudden death of a loved one is unbearable. During this terrible time, support by friends and family is paramount punctuated by those external relationships such as the funeral home, florists, the church, and reception venue. I was very fortunate to have a wonderful experience of support from all particularly, by Buma Funeral Homes.

My initial consultation with Dan was flawless. In keeping with tradition, Dan greeted me right at the door, a small yet significant gesture during an emotional time. During the consultation he was professional, organized, and caring. Post consultation, Dan touched base with me several times regarding the cremation, the vessel, delivery of the prayer cards, schedule of events such as the wake and funeral, death certificates, and photographs for a loop to be played during the wake. Proactively, Dan invited me to contact him or the funeral home for any questions or concerns I had prior to the wake.

In great tribute, Buma confirmed my husband's funeral was the largest from the Uxbridge location with over 300+ people attending the wake and 125 cars in the funeral procession. Dan recognized the importance of staying on schedule and arriving to the church on time so he came to me during the wake with time checks, which I truly appreciated. The talented staff at Buma handled the volume with ease, due to the already full parking lot the staff politely directed attendees to park on the street or go directly to the church. Our limo driver was on time, caring, polite, and very professional, so critical when dealing with heightened emotions.

The Uxbridge location is lovely, warm, and welcoming with plenty of chairs to accommodate the mourners. All of the flower arrangements were positioned beautifully, while my husband's portrait was displayed on an easel in a very respectful manner.

In closing, while death is inevitable, the post mortem planning is torture, extremely stressful, emotional, and overwhelming. Working with an experienced staff and funeral home is critical to one's peace of mind. Dan and the staff at Buma helped me get through these emotional moments in a caring and professional manner. I will be forever grateful for their kindness and direction.“
