About Magnolia Cemetery

Magnolia Cemetery offers a rich historical experience with its many old gravestones, including those from the US Civil War. Visitors can explore the scenic grounds, featuring majestic oaks adorned with hanging Spanish moss. A self-guided driving tour is recommended to appreciate the cemetery's beauty and history, including the burial sites of soldiers from the US Hunley. However, potential visitors should be aware of safety concerns, as prisoners may be working nearby, which has led to reports of harassment. It is advisable to visit when there are no large white vans present to avoid any uncomfortable situations. Despite these issues, it remains one of the safest places to walk in Augusta and provides unique opportunities for exploration and reflection.

Visited this historical cemetery a few times when I was studying at Augusta University. There are 5 Confederate generals interred next to the Confederate soldiers plot on the east end. There was a pick up paper guide near the graves that provided some biographic information of the 5 generals. The atmosphere though a bit somber is quite stunning with Spanish moss hanging from the trees and the many beautifully designed mausoleums and tombs that date back many years ago.

When I was 6 years old in 1962 I used to live across the street from May Park. I would walk up and down the big wall of Magnolia Cemetery wondering what was on the other side of the wall. Childhood memories.
