I started training at Barro Vermelho 8 years ago after moving to DC. I had done a few years of capoeira regional before. I looked around and tried classes at a couple of places, but ultimately chose BV because of the great community. Friendly students, and a very open, non-hierarchical or stand-offish group. Mestre Bomba is very accessible, and easy to talk to. Also very relaxed compared to some capoeira mestres out there. If you're looking for a great workout, with community and self defense, this is it.

I initially joined Barro Vermelho about 6 years ago and this is a great group to join. I’ve been to a few Capoeira groups over time but this is by far the best one. Mestre Bomba is the best and very patient with the students. Very polite group of students as well. As long as you put in the work there’s no limit to have much you can improve. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I booked a beginners class for my boyfriend who I thought always had the chops to be a dancer but instead has been an athlete his entire life and it was the best decision I ever made. He's been to two classes now and he is so happy every time he comes home. He told me the instructor is great and they even let him play instruments. 10/10 would recommend this to anyone looking for a new hobby!
