“I am planning ahead for a memorial, and although I had not scheduled an appointment in advance, or even telephoned, I was in the area (Middletown) so I stopped by the offices of Fox-Becker Granite Company to seek guidance. I was extraordinarily blessed to meet with Sara Sterry Rutter. She was incredibly patient and generous with her time, energy, and expertise, and she showed a remarkable depth of knowledge about every aspect of granite monuments, including aspects that I never even would have known to ask about. She kindly answered all of my questions, and she explained to me the terminology, variety of finishes available (e.g., polished, honed, etc.), and different techniques for lettering, which result in different qualities of visibility. She also showed me sample tiles so that I could not only see the visual appearance of different finishes but could feel their differing textures. Furthermore, she described to me the processes used in the monument industry to ensure the creation of a monument and lettering that will endure the test of time. I explained to her that I was not yet ready to purchase a monument at this point in time, but rather, as of now am simply gathering information for the future. I was impressed that she gave of her valuable time without placing any pressure on me to purchase a monument sooner or even to purchase my monument from Fox-Becker. Rather, her focus was on making sure I understood my options. I remain grateful that she was willing to share her knowledge about memorialization even without any expectation that I would make an immediate purchase.
We spent about an hour together, talking, and Sara shared with me about her values, based on decades of experience, as noted: “It’s important for a memorial company to educate and inform families about the range of possibilities available to them. Once a family understands these options, they can make the decision that best suits their needs and most meaningfully memorializes their loved one’s legacy.”
