Reposting since my original review was removed. I brought my dog here for his vaccines as my first vet after moving to San Diego, which was already scary since he had been seeing the same vet for as long as I’d had him up to this point. For reference, he’s a 10 pound chihuahua who was completely healthy. The vet had asked me if I would like to give him all of his vaccines at once, or if I’d like to split them into separate appointments. I really didn’t know what was and wasn’t ok (I learned afterwards that a dog his size should have never received that many vaccines at once) so I trusted the vet. I told her that for convenience I’d like to keep it in one appointment but that I also didn’t mind bringing him back if they needed to be split up. She said she thought it was fine, and they took him to the back. When they brought him out to me afterwards, he immediately looked very off, I asked the vet tech if he was alright. She dismissed me by saying “we did a lot today so he probably won’t be feeling his best.” As I was holding him trying to check out I could hear him making a gurgling noise and labored breathing. I kept being dismissed whenever I said I didn’t think he was ok. Finally I said that I wanted the vet to look at him to make sure. After a couple hours of keeping him in the back again, they told me he had thrown up during his vaccines and they thought it was possible he had aspirated. They kept him until closing, gave me a list of things to look out for and told me to take him to the emergency vet if any of these things happened, one being vomiting, which he did the minute we got home. I took him to VSH (who I had an incredible experience with) they confirmed that he did aspirate and that he also had pneumonia. They also confirmed that a dog his size should have never received that many vaccines in one appointment. He was in the animal ICU for about 5 days in an oxygen chamber so that he could breathe as well as put on multiple rounds of antibiotics until his pneumonia finally responded. He is ok now, praise God. I really don’t leave reviews, especially negative ones, but I never want anyone else or their pet to have to experience something like this, emotionally or financially.

Great service. Performed surgery on our cat and gave multiple updates after requested. Great communication and staff.

Both of my dogs have received excellent care here at Southpaw Vet. I would say the care is expensive, however I have found that good vet care is pretty expensive everywhere these days. I am low income, so the vets at Southpaw are always willing to work with me as far as giving me paper prescriptions so that I can fill them at Costco for a cheaper price, etc. I really appreciate that. Also if you have a new puppy they have a convenient puppy package that includes all the necessary vaccines and checks for a set price, cheaper than it would be if you purchased them all individually. In addition, every time I am there, everyone from the office staff to the vet technicians are all so friendly and kind. I'm really grateful for Southpaw Vet!

Southpaw Vet is the best choice for vet care in San Diego.

Thanks Juliana, Nicole, and the reception staff for their support and warm welcome to the neighborhood. I appreciate how they are quick to respond and follow up on pet parents' and their clients' needs. They helped book and manage the appointment schedule on phone, which was very helpful as a busy pet partner. They also helped record his past records, which gives pet parents peace of mind when transitioning primary vets, knowing that there is continuity of care and folks that understand that importance. I also want to thank Dr. Claire McCallick for her excellent care, comprehensive exams, and dedication to providing the best possible care and advice. She clearly understood my son's past history and examinations prior to our first appointment. I appreciated her taking the time to answer questions and offer advice on complex topics like dog nutrition and food. We transferred here this week after relocating from OC, and very much felt that the team here operates with professionalism with the furry family member's best interest at heart. The will say that prices here may be a premium but I leave satisfied with the quality of care my son receives.

Adding onto my other review, this is the really bad part. After over a month of giving him insulin and purchasing over $2,800 worth of stuff for him for appointments, medications, and new diet foods; he was getting worse. I called them and said something isn’t right the insulin seems to make him worse and I told them that he actually was a lot more energetic and happy when he wasn’t on insulin and that it’s changed him more and put a lot more pain in him. The doctor ended up calling a day later and saying he must be the rarest cat to be in remission or he never had diabetes and so no insulin anymore and I understand it’s frustrating beings the costs and the insulin making him worse. I told her they should be refunding us for all the medications at the very least as we spend hundreds for the food and insulin and syringes we never needed to get. Also the fact that they are the reason my cat is in more pain to this day now because they had us giving insulin to my cat when he wasn’t even diabetic. Twice a day as well. They said they couldn’t do anything for us for refunds but could give us a complimentary app and testing done that should’ve been done in the beginning before diagnosing him fully with diabetes and or prescribing insulin for that matter. We told them to send us all his documents and call and text recordings and documents and that we are never going back. This vet will scam you for your money if you seem like you could be someone they could walk all over. It is SICKENING. To know what this place did to my baby that I’ve taken very good care of for 14 years now. Shame on all of you guys at southpaw vet. They then wanted to say at the end how they were so sorry and how they gave us discounts because we couldn’t afford everything meaning the demo for the insulin even though HE NEVER NEEDED INSULIN IN THE FIRST PLACE. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU.

Leo’s visit to Southpaw Vet was such a positive experience. The clinic was clean and welcoming, and the entire staff was so kind and attentive. It’s not often you find a vet where your pup actually enjoys being there, but this is definitely one of them!
