About San Diego Peninsula Shotokan Karate
San Diego Peninsula Shotokan Karate is a member dojo of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), which was founded by Tsutomu Ohshima, one of the last remaining students of Master Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern karate. The dojo is proud of its direct lineage from the founding of karate, as well as SKA's unique status as the organizer of the oldest, continuously-run karate tournament in America. Remaining non-commercial and non-profit, the dojo offers high-quality martial arts instruction to the public. They practice in Liberty Station in Point Loma and in Pioneer Park in Mission Hills. The dojo is led by experienced and passionate instructors, such as Erik, Gary, and Brian, who prioritize the traditional values of karate, including discipline, tradition, strategy, and the internal spirit. Participants from across 11 SKA dojos in Southern California have attended the dojo's practices, which focus on techniques like jiyu kumite (free sparring). The dojo is highly regarded for its commitment to preserving the authentic teachings of Master Funakoshi, as passed down through the lineage of Tsutomu Ohshima Sensei and Shihan John Teramoto. If you are seeking an authentic, challenging martial art with deep cultural roots, the San Diego Peninsula Shotokan Karate dojo is worth your time, money, and dedication.
Experienced and dedicated instructors teach traditional Shotokan karate at this dojo of Shotokan Karate of America. Dojo members have different backgrounds and skill levels, but all share an honest attitude, strong mentality, and a desire to learn and understand their martial art. I was looking for a new karate dojo in 2009 after moving to the U.S. and having taken a break from practice for several years. At this dojo I immediately found a new home, new friends, new motivation, and a journey that is continuing to this day. If you're thinking about trying karate or trying a new dojo, I highly recommend visiting San Diego Peninsula Shotokan Karate Dojo. You will not be disappointed.
A great dojo, and a great group of people. Peninsula San Diego Shotokan Karate is all about no-frills, old-school, traditional karate. This is a dojo for those who want to strengthen their minds and their bodies, learn about Japanese and Okinawan martial arts and culture, and be surrounded by a diverse group of dedicated and supportive peers. The dojo is affiliated with Shotokan Karate of America, which is one of the oldest karate organizations in the US, and a not-for-profit. The shihan of SKA, Tsutomu Ohshima is the last living godan (fifth-degree blackbelt) and probably the last living student of the founder of modern karate, Master Gichin Funakoshi. Having the ability to train with Mr. Ohshima and the local dojo blackbelts, all of whom trained extensively with him, is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in martial arts. Being a non-profit, SKA can focus on its core mission - preserving and teaching traditional karate. Anyone interested in learning something new, or anyone who used to train and is looking to start back up, should come and check out a class.
