I was looking for a no frills barber. I don't want a beer or chardonnay, thank you. No I don't want to watch a meditation video while I wait for an available chair, but thanks for asking. No, I'm not interested in sampling your line of artisan shaving lotions or creams. I just want a beard trim. And, that's what you get here. The barber was focused on quality, but didn't neglect the finer points of human interaction. We talked about the OSU getting hosed (a bowl game was on the television). We chatted about the need for Black folks to own property. We laughed at all the new hipster barber shops springing up around town. And I left the chair with a great $12 trim. Fast service, good conversation, and reasonable prices. That's what you get at Salon 17th. P.S. Don't forget to support Oakland-raised businesses and to tip your barber.
