I’ve been visiting Mountain View Cemetery for many years, as several of my family members are buried here, including my grandmother. What used to be a beautifully maintained and peaceful resting place has unfortunately declined in condition over the past few years.
The lawns—especially on the hillside and back areas—have become dry, patchy, and neglected. Irrigation seems inconsistent, and in some sections, the grass has died off completely. It’s heartbreaking to see the area looking so unkempt when this should be a place of respect and care for loved ones who rest here.
Families pay for perpetual care expecting that the grounds will be maintained with dignity, but that simply isn’t happening. When I’ve reached out with concerns, I’ve been met with vague assurances or temporary fixes, yet no lasting improvement.
It’s extremely disappointing to see such a historic and once-beautiful cemetery fall into this state of disrepair. I truly hope the management and board of directors will take responsibility, restore proper maintenance, and bring back the level of care this sacred place deserves.

Huge space, only open to the public Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday though. Seems pretty arbitrary. Security guy at the front was curt and said they weren't open, even though there were clearly joggers/walkers right behind him? If you're going to enforce your odd rules, at least be consistent about it 🤷

Rad little spot to explore. It's been many a year since I've done so, but would, indeed, make another venture out to do so if some spare time were able. Check it, foo. It's a total trip.
Oh and at sundown the turkeys will drive you out of the joint ... So be ye warned, neh?

This used to be a great place to meditate, exercise, and pay respects. However, today's "security" on 7-13-24 at 8:30 am makes me not want to go back. I asked him a benign question and he rolled his eyes and gnarled his teeth and gave a flippant reply and walked away. He was rude, surly, and nasty. The security guard during the week days in the black car is professional and curteous. I was shocked at how the fellow today was carrying on. He is in the grey/beige vehicle this weekend. He needs training on professionalism. With his casual attire, slurring words, and disrespectful mannerisms he does not even look like security and certainly doesn't behave like it. I think he was under the influence.

I was isolated and alone during the 2020 pandemic, laid off from my job, my flatmate moved out to live with his partner leaving me to carry all the expenses when people were scared and staying put, and then my dog of 15 years died. I noticed there was generous pandemic funding and resources in the East Bay for those vulnerable on paper, the aged, the young, to help them through a tough and uncertain economic time. But regardless of my tries or how hard my circumstances, not for me.
On the day my dog Bear died from leukemia, untreatable at an advanced stage, I was numb and in shock not knowing what to do, and simply wanted to take a quiet walk in the cemetery. I used to live nearby and would walk there with my dog. The attendant at the cemetery was dismissive and uncaring, and turned me away, almost in a laughing way. I believe he was following instructions due to pandemic policies. Still, what harm would it have done for me to take a quiet walk alone in the grounds away from other people and say goodbye to my dog. I didn't even have that small comfort and drove aimlessly not knowing what to do. I understand I'm a nobody and the world is a callous place, but that was especially harsh in my grief and pain and I'll never forget it. My best friend had died and MVC shrugged. Just an ounce of compassion would have made all the difference.

It's only open one or two days a week ever since Covid. They have very limited hours and Rude staff. I've actually witnessed the security guard at the gate being verbally abusive to an elderly woman.

We love to take a walk here because it’s beautiful - with big views of the city - and safe! I see lots of kids riding bikes here too!
