The Oakland LGBTQ Community Center is a highly valued resource for the LGBTQIA population in Oakland. It offers a range of community-serving programs, a health clinic providing wellness support and free monkeypox vaccinations, and a welcoming, helpful staff. The center has grown significantly in the past 6 years, meeting the deeply needed resources for the local LGBTQ community.
I've enjoyed the experience of visiting this center the few times I've been there. I am looking forward to visiting the library as I've noticed that queer studies sections have diminished in my local suburban libraries.
I had the honor of meeting George Smith III, the board president, and his amazing husband, Donald Hamilton, at Berkeley Pride yesterday. Their warmth, passion, and dedication to the LGBTQ+ community were truly inspiring. George’s leadership with Oakland Pride, happening on September 7th, promises to be an incredible celebration of community, inclusivity, and empowerment.
Donald’s support and involvement make their impact even stronger, and together they exemplify the resilience, unity, and welcoming spirit that define the Oakland LGBT Community Center. This is a place that I have loved since I was in college. It’s amazing to see how much the Center has grown in the last 6 years and the resources it offers to our LGBTQ Community in Oakland are deeply needed.
