Early on Thursday January 8th, 2026 the major tenant in our Esquimalt United Church facility, the Rainbow Kitchen, called to tell us the furnace was supposedly on, but it was only 53 F degrees inside rather than the 68 degrees the thermostat was set for. We called Island Energy, and they immediately sent a technician (Parker) to check it out. He arrived mid-day and checked each of the relevant controls in turn. Nothing definite showed up. He then checked the heat exchanger, using a miniature camera on a 4’ cord which plugged into his cell phone, he found the exchanger tubes were faulty and needed immediate replacement—if any could be found – not likely due to the age of the furnace. Later that day they called us to say the replacement heat exchangers are no longer available, and a new furnace would be required. It could be delivered from Vancouver on the next full business day (Monday) and installed Tuesday.
Parker and a fellow technician arrived Tuesday morning, removed the older furnace, noticed the existing sheet metal work created a reduction in the size of the cold air return, and rebuilt the ducting to maintain the larger volume, thus increasing the system’s efficiency. All was up and running by mid-afternoon.
