About Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge
The Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge is a decent sized, pretty nice and pretty cool bridge over the James River. It is a short, two-lane bridge with a green color. It is an on-demand bridge that opens for boats, with each lift taking 12 to 20 minutes for a full, safe opening as required. The bridge has history and there are beautiful properties on both sides.
Great views if you get stuck on the bridge. The raising and lowering of the bridge is very very slow, and they open it far in advance of the arrival of the boat, so turn your car off and step out for a breath of air and a nice spot for some picture taking.
So, let me set the record straight for the people who want to complain. This is an "On-Demand" bridge. That means it is opened when a boat calls for it to be opened. The opening is up to the boat captain and not the bridge employee. A lift, on average, takes 12 to 20 minutes from opening to closing. If you are in a hurry. Find another bridge!!! The Coast Guard requires that the lift of the bridge be a full open each time. Again, that is not determined by the bridge operator. Pretty cool bridge over the Jame River. It definitely has history. It is a short bridge. It has a green color to it kinda makes me think about the Statue of Liberty. There are some beautiful properties on both sides. The bridge is two lanes.
