I was a patient at Jana Bertke & Thomas Tsai's office for 5 years. Last year in May, 2013 I was charged my regular co-pay of $10.00 + a $20.00 fee for the photo to measure eye pressure, + the $45.00 contact lens fit fee. All totaled was $75.00 which I paid at checkout. A few months later I got another bill from her for $45.00 stating that my insurance didn't cover the contact lens fitting and that I was only charged the co-pay for glasses exam and not the contact fitting. I called and tried to get someone to explain the additional $45.00 fee since I thought I had paid that in the $75.00 fee; however no one "knew anything." I was told on each occasion someone would call me back. No one ever did. Since my husband & I were looking to purchase a home, I did not want any outstanding bills showing against us, so I went ahead and paid the extra $45.00 thinking that this could be cleared up after and I would get reimbursed if the error was on their part. I got very busy and the bill was put aside until my recent exam on July 14, 2014, when I looked in my file and discovered the matter had never been settled. I spoke to the girl who made my appointment and she advised me to bring the bill with me to my 7/14 exam. Dr. Bertke was not there that day and the girl could not understand why I was charged an extra $45.00 the last time either. I asked for the girl whose name is on my receipt and she told me that girl was fired for "billing people the wrong amounts." This time I was charged $65.00 for co-pay + contact lens fit which I paid after my exam 7/14/14. I did not have the eye pressure photo this time. I pressed for someone to discuss the past bill with. She said Dr. Bertke was handling all the billing herself now and only working 1 day a week from noon to 12:45 pm and I would have to drop in and catch her to discuss the previous bill. I stopped by on Friday, 7/25/14 but was told Dr. Bertke only comes in 15 minutes on Tuesdays. I left my name/number for her to call me. Today, 7/28/14 the girl at the office called me and tried to tell me the fee was not an overcharge. I asked her to break down the charges and explain where the extra $45.00 came from then. She repeated what I listed out at the beginning of this review. I said it still doesn't account for the extra $45.00 bill I was billed later and paid. She said Dr. Bertke would have to talk to me and she'd give her my number. A few minutes later the same girl phoned back and told me that Dr. Bertke said I would have to contact my insurance about it, and to reference the Item No. on the bill to them as that was the insurance claim number. She also informed me that Dr. Bertke said she will NOT discuss it with me! I spoke to a lady at my insurance company and she said they paid their part and I should have only been billed the $45.00 fee ONE time, which was paid the day of my exam. She told me I was overcharged by Bertke and the Item No. she referenced on her bill was not an insurance claim number at all but probably Bertke's in-house billing invoice number. She said it was not only very unprofessional for Bertke to not discuss it with me, but very fishy and possibly some fraudulent billing going on. I relayed what the girl at Bertke's office said about the girl who signed my receipt getting fired for improper billing. The lady at the insurance company told me to file with the BBB and have them contact my insurance so they can back up my claim that I was overcharged, and open an investigation. I highly suggest staying clear of this place! Any doctor who is this unprofessional and goes into 'hiding' when someone questions a bill is certainly NOT to be trusted! I find her to be totally disrespectul and lacking of ethics. I have receipts and proof of all I stated here and will proceed with my claim. It's only $45.00 but no doctor should get away with this type of behaviour and fishy billing practice! Imagine if she overcharges 100 people a month that amount! All I wanted was a satisfactory answer and proof from Bert
