A few months ago my sister came across my mom’s wedding dress in the attic. She had been up in the attic many times to get down Christmas decorations, put away winter clothes in bins, etc and had never come across mom’s gown. The last time she went up there she just so happened to notice a bag right by where you enter the attic. She does not recall that particular bag being anywhere near where it could be clearly seen and to this day still doesn’t know how it made it’s way to the attic entrance. But I digress. So she tells me about finding the dress, how it is in terrible shape full of stains/mold and will be trashing it. Being the sentimental pack rat that I am, I forbid it and told her I would take it. My heart sank when I finally saw it. It was a moldy mess! I had it in my house several months before I finally took it to Five Star Cleaners. I had googled wedding gown restorations in SA and found their number. When I dropped it off they told me they would try their best but that the chemicals might further damage the very delicate 64 year old lace. Mom got married in this dress in 1959! Estimated time for the difficult task was 4 weeks. Two weeks later I got a call that it was ready. Finally went to pick it up this morning. When I told her I was there for the dress she said, “Oh my goodness, you are the one. You are the one with that dress! I’m so excited to show you! Do I have your permission to record your reaction please?” She proceeded to tell me that they processed the dress FOUR times to get it in the best shape they could. Y’all, my niece and I were driven to tears when we saw mom’s dress! It’s beautiful and with a few fixes it will be ready to be worn again (no pressure there Katherine Marie). I wish I had found it before I got married and honored her by wearing it but I know mom has other plans for this. Just looking at it makes me feel a little of the joy she must have felt when they travelled all the way to Monterrey, Mexico to purchase it. It also gave me a glimpse of how stunning she must have looked that day and how proud she must have felt walking down the aisle wearing it. I can’t say enough about Five Star Cleaners. They truly went waaay above and beyond what I expected. Now to find a proper suitor for my niece so we can give mom something to smile about. Lol! 🙌🏼❤️😇 #memories #heirloom
