We originally came in expecting to have teeth #17, #18, and #19 extracted. Before the appointment, we decided to do 2 teeth since the 3rd tooth was not an emergency also finances. So now the treatment plan changed to two extractions also because of a payment issue, and we were told a partial payment had been processed so the total would match the two planned extractions.
At the appointment, the dentist examined everything and recommended extracting only one tooth for now. We agreed with his professional recommendation. After only one extraction was completed, we simply asked about being refunded or credited for the second extraction that was not performed since we had already paid for two extractions.
Instead of explaining the billing process, the office manager told us it was “weird” that we were trying to change the treatment plan in the middle of the appointment and made us feel like we were trying to scam the office. That was never the case. We weren’t changing the treatment plan ourselves—we were following the dentist’s recommendation.
The office manager then went to speak with the dentist. When he came back, he told us the dentist said we had only wanted one extraction. That was confusing because our understanding was that the dentist had recommended extracting only one tooth at that visit, and we agreed with his professional recommendation. Those are two very different things. We did not come in asking for only one extraction—we agreed to one because that was the dentist’s recommendation after evaluating everything.
The conversation became unnecessarily confrontational. Out of frustration, I mentioned that I work for a lawyer and said I would record the conversation because I felt that what had been discussed was being misunderstood. The office manager immediately responded by saying he was an attorney and repeatedly told me I would be kicked out if I was recording. I showed him that I was not recording, but he continued repeating the warning.
After that exchange, I told them we would just move forward with the extractions because I wanted to avoid any more conflict. The dentist then mentioned that a root canal might be another option based on his recommendation. However, after being accused of trying to change the treatment plan for a refund, I asked that the teeth simply be extracted as originally planned.
Looking back, I recognize that saying I would record the conversation wasn’t the best way to handle the situation. However, I felt like we were being treated as though we were trying to avoid paying, when that was never the issue. We had already paid for two extractions, but only one extraction was performed. It is completely reasonable to ask how the payment would be adjusted for a service that wasn’t provided.
I understand that miscommunications happen, but the way this situation was handled was incredibly disappointing. A simple explanation and respectful conversation would have resolved everything. Instead, we left feeling embarrassed, disrespected, and accused on of something we never intended to do. I would highly recommend Emergency Dentist of Texas Fort worth, they have great customer service and a few low reviews but nothing compared to this location the reviews speak for itself and now I will be more careful where we go and also ALWAYS get a 2nd opinion before agreeing to anything payment, recommendations etc. My advice to future patients is to write everything down during your appointment. Since I was told I couldn’t record the conversation, I recommend keeping detailed notes about the treatment plan, any changes that are recommended, and what you’re told regarding billing. It can help avoid misunderstandings like the one we experienced.
