In my early twenties, I made the decision to have areola surgery on my left breast because I was self-conscious about its size compared to the other (a completely natural variation that I now realize I should have embraced). Unfortunately, I wasn’t warned about the possibility of scarring, and I developed raised, white keloid scars in a circular pattern around my areola. They were impossible to ignore and looked anything but natural. Since only one breast was affected, the scars stood out even more, and I immediately regretted my decision.

Over the years, I tried everything to reduce the scars—surgical revisions, laser treatments, silicone creams and sheets—but nothing worked. Eventually, I gave up and resigned myself to living with them. While others couldn’t see the scars on a daily basis, I could. They were a constant reminder of my youthful mistake, and I felt embarrassed, especially when it came to intimate moments and explaining the scars to partners!

A few years ago, I discovered paramedical tattooing and scar camouflage. I reached out to multiple medical tattoo artists, but they ALL told me that it wasn’t possible to blend the scars with my natural skin tone. Instead, they suggested adding darker pigment, which would have made my areola look even larger—exactly the opposite of what I wanted!

Then I found Elena at Illusions by Ink Studio. From the moment we had our initial Zoom consultation, I felt hopeful!! When I asked if she could blend the scars with my natural skin tone, she immediately said YES! Her confidence was such a relief, especially after being turned away so many times.

Each session required a three-hour drive (each way) between Austin and Dallas, but it was absolutely worth it! I even made the trips fun by stopping at Bucee’s or treating myself to Italian goodies at Eataly.

Little by little, Elena worked her magic. My scars began to fade into my skin tone, and while they’re still technically there, they’re practically invisible now. Before, the scars drew all the attention, but now you wouldn’t notice them unless you were really looking closely. For the first time in 15 years, I feel like my body looks natural and whole again.

I cannot express how grateful I am to Elena for her expertise, kindness, and talent. This process has been life-changing for me. If you’re seriously considering paramedical tattooing, don’t hesitate—Elena’s work is incredible!
