Fred is obsessed with transgender people. He spends his career ignoring the advice of actual, real doctors because he hates transgender people and he doesn't care what the statistics say about suicide rates among transgender teens who aren't allowed to transition. what matters to Fred is that everyone conform to his small, narrow, hateful worldview. The kind of guy whose grandchildren will grow to hate because his hatefulness is an obsession. His goal now is to act as dead weight in the slow march toward progress. He plans on being the George Wallace of the LGBTQ+ movement in South Dakota. The thing he doesn't get is that the younger generations aren't as full of hate and fear as he is. And that when you spend your career trying to roll back the rights of the oppressed, eventually you'll be gone and someone less cruel and hateful will probably take your place and undo your life's work. Strom Thurmond and George Wallace aren't remembered for actually accomplishing anything in the long term, Fred. And neither will you be.
